COURSE OVERVIEW

The Product design program provides a theoretical and practical approach to education, which offering professional skills, theoretical foundation, and general education to aid students in the development and maturation of their artistic abilities and technical skills. Emphasis is placed on learning the concepts and skills for creating innovative design ideas and solution for industrial production. Product design is the process of creating a new product to be sold by a business to its customers for mass production. A very broad concept, it is essentially the efficient and effective generation and development of ideas through a process that leads to new products. Product designers conceptualize and evaluate ideas, turning them into tangible inventions and products. The product designer's role is to combine art, science, and technology to create new products which is user-oriented based. Each semester course is 14 weeks in duration. Tools include design software such as Adobe Photoshop. Adobe Illustrator, AutoCAD 2D, Rhinoceros 3D is used for visual presentation and also technical documentation. These software are the most prevalently used computer programs used throughout the world. The class is organized into three different components:

Critic Session

Presentations

Workshop-based Projects

Product Design lectures covers many design aspects, technical data and theory. Throughout the semester, students will be issued various design problems, and then asked to develop design solutions over a period of weeks. During the critic session, the development of each project will be closely advised by the instructors. At various stages the projects will be presented, discussed then graded according to how thoroughly they solve the design problem. Students will learn a wide range of skills, which includes 3D modeling, ergonomics knowledge, sketching, material and process, marketing, critical thinking and others.
