Universiti Malaya (UM) is set to open its first international branch campus, and it&rsquo;s headed to Shandong, China.This historic move marks the first time a Malaysian public university will establish a physical presence in China. According to UM vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Seri Dr Noor Azuan Abu Osman, discussions are already underway, and if all goes well, the campus will begin operations next year.Shandong was selected as the host province due to its robust economic standing. &ldquo;I met with Shandong province vice-governor Zhang Haibo recently, and we expect things to progress smoothly,&rdquo; he said, highlighting that the province ranked among the top three in China for gross domestic product last year and is projected to continue its growth.Support from the Shandong provincial government includes financial backing and infrastructure assistance to get the campus off the ground. Prof Noor Azuan believes the initiative will allow UM to strategically tap into China&rsquo;s strengths in both economy and technology.&ldquo;The setting up of a branch campus in China isn&rsquo;t just about expanding academic footprints,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;It&rsquo;s about building bridges between cultures, fostering innovation and creating lifelong opportunities for both students and researchers.&rdquo;During a recent trip to Beijing, he also met with top officials, including China&rsquo;s Deputy Education Minister Wu Yan and the president of Peking University, Prof Gong Qihuang. According to him, there are 46 special needs students enrolled in UM, and 10 and 54 students studying at UNIMAS and University Sains Malaysia respectively."With the expansion of special needs education at the school level, there is an imperative to ensure that tertiary education is able to meet the needs of society."Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh is Malaysia&#39;s Higher Education Minister. <h4>NUS and NTU secured first and second spots among Asian universities in the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings for 2015 to 2016.</h4><h4><a href="https://img.afterschool.my/storage/uploads/images/getadvice/39996/598a92788dbb7.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-39997 fr-fic fr-dii" src="https://img.afterschool.my/storage/uploads/images/getadvice/39996/598a92788dbb7.jpg" alt="news - singapore malaysia qs ranking" width="600" height="400"></a></h4>National University of Singapore (NUS) ranked 12 while Nanyang Technological university (NTU) ranked 13.In their press release on Tuesday, QS said that this year’s rankings adopted a modified methodology in measuring research impact for “fairer evaluations for universities with a strong profile in areas with lower research activity, such as arts, humanities and social sciences”.QS’ head of research Ben Sowter. explained that these latest results reveal more diversity than ever in the distribution of world-class universities at the highest levels.Meanwhile, University Malaya (UM) entered the top 150, improving by five spots at 146 from its 2014 ranking of 151.UM has managed to remain ahead of the rest of the local public universities and scored an overall score of 62.1 in its ranking.

National University of Singapore (NUS) ranked 12, Nanyang Technological university (NTU) ranked 13 while Universiti Malaya (UM) ranked 146.
