The maritime working environment comprises physical, electrical, ergonomic, chemical, biological, psychosocial hazards which could lead to occupational accidents, injuries and also diseases. For example, shipping is perceived to be a relatively dangerous industry. Seafarers face extreme work conditions, isolations, long hours of work, rigid organizational structures, high levels of stress and fatigue. They must be able to communicate with crewmates who come from different background and language. Thus creating a language barrier. Consideration should be given to the challenges and recognized when developing a safe work system on board. Alcohol and drug abuse, violence and harassment, and infectious diseases are further potential problems.
