A Medical Assistant, also known as an Assistant Medical officers (AMO). Works closely with the Medical Officer to assist in the clinical units in a hospital or any healthcare setting. Students are trained in the areas of basic medical sciences and professional modules such as medicine, emergency medicine, surgery, public health, pharmacology, behavioural science and nursing. The students will experience learning in the classroom, practical learning and hands-on activities that is combined with student self-directed learning.
The students undergo clinical placements to enhance their clinical knowledge and competencies as well as skills in major areas such as medical, surgical, emergency and other relevant areas.Upon graduation all graduates are accepted and registered as members of the Medical Assistant Board, Malaysia, (Lembaga Pembantu Perubatan). Graduates will be legally certified as Medical Assistants and are allowed to practice with the issuance of an Annual Practice Certificate by the Medical Assistant Board under the Ministry of Health, Malaysia.
The Medical Assistant is able to work in Emergency rooms, Health clinics, Hospitals, Rehabilitation centers, and in the Plantation sector and assists the medical doctor in specialized areas such as handling cardiograms, in specialized emergency and trauma areas.
