Are you interested in medicine, but perhaps put off by the duration or the cost? Do you love the hands-on aspect of most activities? This field is mostly about sitting in a laboratory running tests all day. But then again what would medicine be without laboratory technicians?
With so many degree options out there, here are some top reasons why you should study Medical Laboratory Technology
Have you ever wondered why people from different blood groups cannot donate among each other? What is the science behind it? Or why do different people have higher and lower levels of immune systems? A course in Medical Laboratory Technology is the answer to all these questions.
A Medical Laboratory Technology degree will equip you with the necessary skills to analyse various problems, enhance your critical thinking skills, research about patients’ bodily fluid and how it causes illness.
Behind the facade of what you see in hospitals such as doctors, nurses, managers, etc., a Medical Laboratory Technologist works hard in the laboratory testing urine and blood samples and gives a report to the doctor who then advises you on what to do next. They are the bread and butter of the health industry.
“A scientist in his laboratory is not a mere technician: he is also a child confronting natural phenomena that impress him as though they were fairy tales.”
- Marie Curie

It is not necessary for you to do your postgraduate but doing so would help you advance in your career and open up more job opportunities. You can opt to work straight after degree as well.
Whether in a medical facility or independently run laboratory, medical technologists often work with infectious specimens. Infection control and sterilization protocols must be followed to minimize these hazards.
The specimens you collect and analyse will be the basis doctors use to come to their diagnosis, meaning to you are directly responsible for lives! You’ll need to make sure your analysis is accurate, right to the last cell.
You’ll often have irregular working hours, some longer than others. You’ll also have to work with numerous personnel in the hospital and deal with different machines. You’ll need to be versatile to work with all of them!
