COURSE OVERVIEW

Doctor of Dental Surgery is a 5 year programme. The curriculum is designed to fulfill the five major components of dental education, namely:-Preclinical dentistry.

-Clinical dentistry.

-Hospital based dentistry.

-Community/Society based dentistry.

-Life-long learning experience through research exercise

This program is conducted in two stages:

  1. Preclinical Phase – A two year program, which covers Medical Science courses (Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Microbiology and Dental Courses (Professional Development and IT, Oral Biology, Society and Health, Preventive Dentistry, Dental Public Health, Dental Materials and Dental Technology). The latter is designed to help the students learn about the technical aspects of the dental program. Assessments take place in every semester along with yearly professional examinations.
  2. Clinical Phase – This phase covers the next three years of study. In this phase, integrated teaching and learning process is undertaken to expose the students to dental clinical work and it also helps them to learn about community dentistry. This program offers the students with the opportunity to enhance their critical thinking skills and acquire knowledge about a particular discipline of dentistry through research exercise, which is of interest to them. It includes subjects, such as Preventive Dentistry and Dental Public Health, Oral Maxillofacial Surgery, Conservative Dentistry, Prosthodontics, Periodontology, Orthodontics, Paediatric Dentistry, Oral Pathology, Oral Medicine, Dental Imaging, Endodontics and Dental Research. Students of this program, will also be exposed to medical subjects namely; General Medicine and General Surgery for better treatment of patients with chronic illness, who may require special needs as far as dental treatment is concerned.

General Certificate:

  1. SPM: 5BS each in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics (or Additional Mathematics) and another subject OR
  2. General Certificate education ordinary (“O”) levels: 5BS each in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics Education (or Additional Mathematics) and another subject OR
  3. Unified Examination Certificate (UEC: 84 each in 4 subjects i.e. Biology, Chemistry, Physics, (or Mathematics or Additional Mathematics) and another Subject.

Higher Level Certificate:

  1. (STPM): Grades BBB, ABC or AAC in 3 subjects i.e. Biology, Chemistry, Physics or Mathematics OR
  2. General Certificate of Education Advanced (A'') Levels: Grades BBB, ABC or AAC in 3 subjects i.e. Biology, Chemistry, Physics or Mathematics OR
  3. Matriculation or Foundation Science or Pre-Medical course: CGPA 3.0 (out of 4) in 3 subjects i.e. Biology, Chemistry, Physics or Mathematics And Provided the course is not less than 1 year in the same accredited institution And the minimum entry qualification is 5 Bs each in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics (or Additional Mathematics) and another subject at School Certificate level or its equivalent. OR
  4. Unified Education Certificate (UEC): B4 each in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics / Additional Mathematics OR
  5. Monash University Foundation Pre- (MUFY)/ University of New South Wales (UNSW) Foundation;Pre- (MUFY)/ University of New South Wales (UNSW) Foundatio/Western Australia Curriculum Council/HSC Sydney Australia/ Australian Universities Foundation Programmes/South Australian Matriculation (SAM)/South Australian matriculation (SAM): Aggregate or average of 80% or 80% ATAR or its equivalent and 80% each in Biology, Chemistry, Physics / Mathematics. OR
  6. Victorian Certificate of Education Australia Year 12: Aggregate or average of 80% in any 3 subjects i.e. Biology, Chemistry, Physics or University Program Mathematics or 80% ATAR OR
  7. Canadian Pre- University (CPU) Or Canadian International Matriculation Program (CIMP/Canadian Grade 12/13): Average of 80% in any 3 subjects i.e. Biology, chemistry, Physics or Mathematics OR
  8. Indian Pre-University: Average of 70% in any 3 subjects i.e. Biology, Chemistry, Physics or Mathematics OR
  9. International Baccalaureate (IB): 30 points with a minimum of 2 science subjects or Mathematics at Higher Level (HL) and 1 science subject at Standard Level And Attained a minimum score of 4 each in Biology, chemistry, Physics or Mathematics.
 

Diploma Level:

CGPA 3.5 (out of 4) And Provided the course is not less than 5 semesters or 2½ years in the same accredited institution And The minimum entry qualication is 5Bs each in Biology, chemistry, Physics or Mathematics (or Additional Mathematics) and another subject at School Certicate level or its equivalent.

Degree Level:

Degree in Medical Science: CGPA 3.3 (out of 4) 5-year undergraduate medical programme OR Degree in the Arts or Humanities: CGPA 3.5 (out of 4) 5-year undergraduate medical program and 3Cs each in Biology, Chemistry, Physics or Mathematics or Additional Mathematics at SPM or its equivalent or an accredited bridging course.
