Get to know the New and Upcoming Malaysia Branch Campuses

Malaysia has been attracting a lot of foreign universities to open their branch campuses here. We compiled a list of universities which have either already opened their Malaysia campuses for admission or are in the midst of completion and will be open for operations soon:

Open for Admission:

The Sarawak Campus is Curtin University Western Australia’s first offshore campus. Located in Miri, it started operations in February 1999. Curtin Sarawak was awarded the Multimedia Super Corridor Status in November 1999, which was renewed in 2006. Curtin University Sarawak offers Foundation, Diploma and Degrees in areas such as Commerce, Arts, Engineering & Science and Media, Culture & Communication.

The University of Nottingham Malaysia campus opened its doors to students in September 2000. This was the first British university to venture outside of the UK and this move earned them the first ever Queen’s Award for Enterprise in international achievement. The University offers foundation programmes in art, business, engineering and science and bachelor’s degree in arts & social sciences, engineering and science.

Monash University set up its branch campus in Malaysia in 1998 after an invitation by Malaysia’s Ministry of Education to collaborate with Sunway University. Monash is known as the first foreign university to set up its campus in Malaysia. Monash University offers undergraduate degrees in the areas of arts and social sciences, business, engineering, information technology, medicine and health sciences, and science.

Swinburne University of Technology, Melbourne opened its Malaysia branch in 2000 in Kuching, Sarawak, as a partnership between Swinburne Australia and the Sarawak Government. In 2009, the Malaysian Qualifications Agency’s Rating System for Higher Education (SETARA 2009) awarded the University with the rating Tier 5: Excellent. This is the highest rating achieved by any university and is one of only 18 universities to receive such a rating. Swinburn University of Technology offers Foundation, Diploma and Degree courses is disciplines such as Business/Commerce, Design, Engineering/Science and Information & Communication Technology.

The Newcastle Univercity Medicine (NuMED) is one of the latest universities to open its branch campus in Malaysia. It commenced operations on 1 November 2011 and is located in Iskandar Malaysia. NuMED offers Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) programmes to undergraduates.
The Netherlands Maritime Institute of Technology (NMIT) commenced classes on 23 May 2011. Its permanent campus will be at [email protected], but it is currently operating at its city campus at the Kotaraya Office Tower, Johor Bahru. NMIT currently offers Diploma programmes in Maritime Transport Management and Transport Management, but eventually aims to introduce Diploma programmes in Shipping Management, Maritime Law, Offshore Maritime Operations, Maritime Health, Safety, Security & Environmental Management, Naval Architecture, Maritime Entrepreneurship, Maritime Officer (Deck) and Maritime Officer (Engineering).
Manipal International University is a multidisciplinary institution, aiming to fulfil the needs of human capital development which was addressed the in 10th Malaysia Plan. Athough majority of MIU belongs to its Indian partner (Manipal University), it's CEO and Vice Chancellor are Malaysians therefore MIU is more of a Malaysian University.Currently, the university focuses on offering foundation and degrees in the areas of engineering, business and life sciences. However, there are future plans to introduce Humanities, Design, Law, Hospitality, Education, and Media and Communication. MIU will soon open its campus in Nilai. Currently, though, it is operating out of the former MAS Academy building in Kelana Jaya.
Raffles Education Corporation Limited operates 38 colleges in 35 cities across 14 countries, and thus, is the largest private education group in the Asia-Pacific.  Currently operating from its temporary premises at Menara Kotaraya, Jalan Trus, Johor Bahru, Raffles will open its branch campus in Iskandar Malaysia’s EduCity zone. The school will be built across 65 acres and will include disciplines such as arts, design, business, health sciences, education, and social science specialisations.
 The University of Southampton is lauded as the one of the top 15 research universities in the UK. Recently, the Malaysian Ministry of Higher Education invited the university to open a branch campus for engineering at [email protected], Johor. The university welcomed its new students and their families this September and has started offering courses in various branches of Mechanical Engineering.

Heriot-Watt is one of the top universities in the UK for business and industry. This early 2013, the university will open its branch campus in Putrajaya Holdings' prestigious headquarters in Menara PjH in the centre of Putrajaya. The university is the first Scottish university to open its branch in Malaysia. The Putrajaya campus will be built using a green concept and will be fully completed by 2014. The programmes offered at Herriot-Watt are Architectural Engineering, Robotics and Cybertronics, and Chemistry with Forensic Science, through to Languages and Intercultural Studies, Fashion Technology and Psychology (Applied).

Opening Soon:

Jaipur National University was established in October 2007. The university will be opening its branch campus in Perak. Jaipur National Unviversity offers undergraduate courses in the fields of Engineering & Technology, Languages, Literature & Society, Life & Basic Sciences, Media Studies, Hotel Management & Catering Technology, Computer & Systems Sciences, Nursing, Pharmaceutical Sciences and Business & Management.

Hanyang University was established in 1939 and has 339 sister institutions in 42 countries. The university will be setting up its Malaysia campus in Seremban by 2014. It plans to operate undergraduate courses in the fields of electronics, engineering science, business administration as well as international studies.

The University of Reading opened its doors in the late 19th century and is the only university to receive the Royal Charter between World War 1 and World War 2. It was recently announced that it plans to open its Malaysia branch campus in Iskandar Malaysia’s EduCity in Johor by 2014. Meanwhile, the university will operate temporarily at Menara Kotaraya starting May this year.

A new addition to the list of universities planning to open in Malaysia is Xiamen University from China. This will be the university's first overseas campus. The campus will be opening later this year. The university's main campus is located in Xiamen. Founded in 1921 by Mr Tan Kah Kee, Xiamen University is a top university which aims to build a name both locally and internationally. The university is known for being the first university in China to open an academic institution on Malaysia studies in 1995.
By 2018, Shanghai Jiao Tong University’s branch campus will be established in Sarawak. In the meantime, the branch campus will take in its first batch of students in September 2014 through Chung Hua Middle School, one of its temporary campuses. It expects to attract about 1,800 students during the first year and up to 5,000 (including foreign students) in the proceeding years.
