While there will always be a place for the classics such as electrical engineering or mechanical engineering, in the new world, more streamlined and specific courses are necessary to supplement them. While the student who memorised may have graduated top of his class, the one who put in an equal time focusing on using and implementing the lessons learnt with his hands will have the slight edge, if not during the interview, then certainly during the infant stages of the job itself. What happens when a student chooses a course he/she doesn’t like? What may seem highly unlikely, is actually much more common than you think. How common? Well, in 2015, the Higher Education Policy Institute and the Higher Education Academy of the USA conducted a study, which found that 1 in 3 students believe they may have chosen the wrong course. This particular study was conducted on a staggering 1.5 million students, meaning that an astonishing 500,000 of them felt they chose the wrong course. The young lady initially got herself into one of the public universities in Malaysia and started her Foundation in Law, a course she pursued for almost a year. However, throughout the semesters, she found herself drawn to solving math problems and equations instead of reading her law textbooks! She was then left with a dilemma, to continue with the course she already started, or pursue her newfound passion in Math and numbers. GMI has plenty of advanced technology and machinery for their students to explore. In my final year, I was selected to be the leader of Final Year Project (although I’m the only girl) and was required to supervise four of my team members. I developed my leadership skills from this assignment. Her choice? None other than the no.1 ranked university in Australia, the Australian National University. The 22nd best university in the world based on the QS World Rankings was competitive, comprehensive and intense, the perfect culture needed to cultivate excellence. She flew back to Malaysia for good in early February 2017 and started working as a Process Engineer in Beyonics Technology Senai Sdn Bhd, after just a month of searching.<a href="https://img.afterschool.my/storage/uploads/images/getadvice/73331/5a227447029f9.jpg"><img class="size-full wp-image-73338 aligncenter fr-fic fr-dii" src="https://img.afterschool.my/storage/uploads/images/getadvice/73331/5a227447029f9.jpg" alt="" width="800" height="400"></a>“I am in-charge of a new project for this company mainly in cordless phone production together with my team. In one month, we are required to plan and execute the project until it runs smoothly.” Syazwani once again highlighted GMI as playing a pivotal role in her moulding as an engineer, with their emphasis on both practical and theoretical knowledge complementing their advanced technology incredibly well.<a href="https://img.afterschool.my/storage/uploads/images/getadvice/73331/5a22744710ef5.jpg"><img class="size-full wp-image-73339 aligncenter fr-fic fr-dii" src="https://img.afterschool.my/storage/uploads/images/getadvice/73331/5a22744710ef5.jpg" alt="" width="800" height="400"></a><h3>“I equally developed my practical skills alongside with my theoretical knowledge. The students are trained to attend classes similar to engineering working environment. We were privileged to explore the latest devices such as SIEMENS S7-315F PN/DP Programmable Logic Controller (PLC), KUKA 6-axis robot, conventional lathe machine, conventional milling machine, Solidworks CAD software, pneumatic cylinders and valve, hydraulic cylinders and valves, different types of motors (DC, AC, and stepper) and many more.”</h3><a href="https://img.afterschool.my/storage/uploads/images/getadvice/73331/5a2274471ed71.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-73343 fr-fic fr-dii" src="https://img.afterschool.my/storage/uploads/images/getadvice/73331/5a2274471ed71.jpg" alt="" width="800" height="400"></a>Not forgetting the teachers or, as they are known at GMI, Technical Training Officers (TTOs), who are the cornerstone of any educational institution, at every level. For a university with such a high emphasis on technology, one might expect a little less from the TTOs. However, Syazwani says the TTOs were the icing on the cake, adding how the lecturers and staff always assisted their students from the first day of their programme till the day of their graduation. “Since they always focus on small scale class, students can focus easier and they can get more attention from the lecturers.”

Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) is synonymous to making graduates industry-relevant. One of the most challenging yet exciting parts of TVET is bringing the industry relevance on campus. German-Malaysian Institute, or fondly known as GMI, has so far been successful in doing this. And this happened again with the launching of the GMI-DMG Mori Technology Centre at Kompleks Teknologi 3, Production Technology Department.The GMI-DMG Mori Technology Centre was officially launched by H.E. Mr Holger Michael, German Ambassador to Malaysia with the signing of the plaque at the entrance of the technology centre. Also present at the ceremony were Mr Ralf Ernest, Head of National & International Sales for Educational Projects for DMG Mori Akademie; Dr Frank Beerman, DMG Mori Chief Operating Officer; GMI Board Members; Mr Yusoff Md Sahir, GMI Managing Director; and GMI Management team.<a href="https://img.afterschool.my/storage/uploads/images/getadvice/73015/59883ce8b6f67."><img class="size-full wp-image-73016 aligncenter fr-fic fr-dii" src="https://img.afterschool.my/storage/uploads/images/getadvice/73015/59883ce8b6f67." alt="" width="800" height="400"></a>The centre was initiated with the MoU signing ceremony on May 7th in the year 2007 between DMG Training Akademie GmbH and German-Malaysian Institute. While GMI provides the equipped training ground, DMG Mori Training – Akademie provides the certification on the competency training conducted at this technology centre. This collaboration covers expert input on training facilities, exchange of technical know-how and setting up of a training hub. The main intention of the collaboration was to create and establish a first-class modern, future-oriented education system for the Malaysian Precision Engineering Industry. And with the GMI-DMG Mori Technology Centre here at GMI, digital fabrication, a component of Industrie 4.0, comes to life. These 11 gentlemen – nine Technical Training Officers and two technicians in CNC Precision Technology, were awarded the competence certification automatically making them DMG-Mori Certified Trainers in CNC Milling Programming, CNC Turning Programming, Didactic Training and CNC Turning Programming (Advanced).The DMG-Mori Certified Trainers are Ahmad Hazlan bin Hasmi, Mazlan bin Jaafar, Muhammad Hafiz bin Adnan, Noor Azam bin Salim, Rashdin bin Ramli, Saiful Azril bin Abdul Rahim, Sharani bin Yusof, Sohaimi bin Pawachi, Tahrin bin Othman, Zairul Nazim bin Mohd Shah, and Zuliskandar bin Ahmad.The event ended with a showcase of the DMG machinery at work by the eleven DMG-Mori Certified Trainers. With this technology centre, GMI and DMG hope to train and deliver exceptionally competent machinists to the CNC industryGMI – July 2017 intake is now open. GMI: Where the Best Industry-Education Alliances are Created

German-Malaysian Institute or fondly known as GMi repeatedly placed its name in Technical Vocational Education & Training records when they launched the German Dual Vocational Training Program (GDVT) in Mechatronics last year. Three multinational companies - Infineon, Hauni and Muhlbauer joined forces to turn this programme into a reality. A total of 19 apprentices were chosen to be the pioneering batch for this programme, that will take 3.5 years to complete, broken down with 70% practical exposure at the industries and 30% on theories with GMI. Upon completion, these apprentices will be awarded advanced skill diploma equivalent to SKM 5 and a certificate from German Chamber of Commerce.<a href="https://img.afterschool.my/storage/uploads/images/getadvice/72975/59883706b4db2."><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-72976 fr-fic fr-dii" src="https://img.afterschool.my/storage/uploads/images/getadvice/72975/59883706b4db2." alt="" width="800" height="400"></a>This is the third GDVT programme conducted at GMi. The previous two are - Industrial Management and Logistics Operation Management Program, with two enrolments since June 2014. His Excellency reiterated in his speech that GMi, with its advanced technology, is the flagship institution of Germany in the field of engineering technology training. Technology has experienced rapid growth, making it very important for Malaysia to grasp the technology fast and as well as possible, while adapting the German engineering culture. He congratulated all apprentices for being chosen to be in the first batch and urged them to be committed with the programme.During the same note, Yusoff Md Sahir, the Managing Director for GMi mentioned in his welcoming speech that Malaysia is in need of highly competent and skilled workers, and it is imperative to find them as the country is gearing up to become an industrialized nation by 2020. The GDVT program is an industry-oriented training programme and is conducted at the workplace in actual work conditions under the guidance of competent coaches/trainers. Apprentices will be trained as a certified skilled manpower at their own workplace. “With greater opportunities for career advancement available, this will promote workplace loyalty. Employers will be able to build a team of skilled mechatronic technicians who are highly specialised and well-versed in their company’s technologies. This will not only lead to higher efficiency and productivity, but also lessen companies’ dependence on foreign experts and workers in the long run.”GMI – July 2017 intake is now open.
