What skills do you need to become an Flight Attendant?

Friendly & Helpful

Cabin Crews are similar to ambassadors to the company. Travellers do not see the Pilot at all, but even if they do, it’s only a glance. Cabin Crews are the ones facing people all day, serving and communicating with them so having an open mindset with a friendly and helpful personality helps in boosting the brand of the airline (and puts you in a good mood too!). Their appreciation, smile and, perhaps, tips are your rewards.

Being well versed in English

You’ll have to deal with people from different backgrounds. While it may be almost impossible to learn every language in the world, you must at least master the English language as it is the most common language among others. Being well-versed in English also projects a good image of your company.

Calm & Patient

A baby is crying, someone puked on the carpet and a drunk guy is yelling at someone else while the plane is going through turbulence. What do you do? This is why Flight Attendants not only need to be calm but know how to calm others down. Your patience and sense of calm will come in handy at a time like this.

What field(s) of study should you choose to become an Flight Attendant?

  • Hospitality Management

What are the requirements to be an Flight Attendant?

Age: At least 18 years old

Height - Exact height depends on a particular airline’s preference. Typically, you have to be at least 157cm tall to help travellers place their hand luggages in the overhead compartment.

Physical Appearance - Slim physique. You represent the company so you have to look good.

Health - Flight attendants must be in a good health condition.

Language skills: Fluent in English and Bahasa Malaysia

Other skills - inexhaustible smile, vibrant and energetic, good communication skills, positive attitude

While a high school education is enough most of the time, it’s best to get a degree to make yourself more employable. It is also important to note that if you are a woman, you would most likely be wearing heels all day.

What are the working hours of an Flight Attendant

While there is no fixed timing on how long you will be working until the flight schedules are released, there is a time limit on how much time you can spend on a plane. So you can’t be on a plane forever. The maximum amount of time you can be on a plane per day is 12 to 14 hours. If you are working on short haul flights, you would have to be on multiple flights per day. If you are on long-haul flights, you would only do it once, and if it’s longer than what you can work, then you would stop over in a different country and hopefully stay in a nice hotel.
