  • Poor job-hunting skills could be the culprit for unemployment
  • More career counselors might be needed to motivate these graduates
  • 12% of the 44,391 feel that need to further their studies here or abroad

A total of 184,581 students graduated last year and 44,391 (24%) are still unemployed, mostly bachelor’s degree holders. In a survey conducted by the Ministry of Higher Education, it appears that majority of these unemployed graduates are still seeking for jobs. More than 30,600 (69.5%) respondents say that they’re still looking for jobs.

The reason why they’re still unemployed is because the majority do not possess adequate job-hunting skills and are too dependent on others for information on available jobs. According to respondents in a study by the Labour Department, they needed a mentor or coach to guide them on ways to find a job.

Meanwhile, there are those who feel a bachelor’s degree is not enough, hence 5,378 (12%) are still waiting for opportunities to further their studies.

After years of studying, nearly 5% or 2,035 feel that they needed a good break while more than 3% or 1,596 had to forego job seeking to attend to some family business.

Nearly 3% (1,307) feel that the jobs offered were not suitable or didn't meet their expectations. Collectively, about 1,500 are afraid to face the working environment (0.9%); are not interested to work (1.2%); and have deliberately chosen not to work (1%).

A few others (0.6%) have health problems that keep them from joining the workforce.
