Malaysia is in need of professionals who are specialized in the marine industry. At present there are no shipyards or reputable consultants capable of the entire development of ship design either for merchant or naval vessels. This lack of professional skills is why our shipbuilding industry lags behind countries like China, Korea and Japan. Furthermore the Malaysian shipyard seems to prefer to engage foreign ship design consultants rather than building on their own capability and capacity which is currently in critical need of development. There are few Malaysian and foreign ship owners and most prefer their vessels to be designed by foreign ship design consultants and constructed in shipyards overseas. In view of the current scenario, there is a definite need for skilled professional in the field of ship design for long term sustainability of the industry. In order to reach this objective and to fulfill the needs of the industry sufficient number of professionals in the field of ship design must be produced. In line with the vision of UniKL, it is timely for the university to train and develop technical entrepreneurs specializing in ship design so that that Malaysian marine industry will be highly innovative and will be able to engage competitively in the global market.
