The Speech Sciences program is a four year undergraduate honors degree program that prepares students for entry-level qualification as speech-language pathologist. Speech-language pathologists or also known as speech-language therapists are health care professionals who are involved in providing rehabilitative care for adults and children with communication disorders including speech, language, hearing, voice, fluency and swallowing problems. The program is therefore designed with strong foundation in basic medical and social sciences in the first two years followed by courses in core speech-language pathology. Clinical education is introduced in developmental stages and covers aspects of assessment, diagnosis, treatment and management of various speech-language and communication disorders. Students undergo clinical training at the UKM clinic facility, as well as at surrounding hospitals, community-based rehabilitation centres and early intervention centres. Students undertake an honors level research project in the final year of studies under close supervision of faculty members in areas related to human communication sciences and its disorders.
