More than 750K PTPTN borrowers paid zero

Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh told the Parliament back in August that there are 1,917,033 students with study loans from PTPTN and had completed their studies. RM18.311 billion should have been collected from these students. However, only 1,163,975 students serviced their loans and began repaying their dues. Only RM9.6 billion have been collected out of the stated amount.

PTPTN expects to collect RM3.518 from students who are repaying their dues accordingly. Nevertheless, 753,058 PTPTN defaulter have yet to repay their dues, and the accumulating loan amount is said to be RM5.191 billion.

In an effort to encourage more borrowers to pay, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak in the tabling of the budget said discounts have been offered to borrowers to start repaying their loans. 15% discount offered to students who fully settle their outstanding loan, 10% discount for settling 50% of the outstanding debt in one payment, and 10% discount for the monthly settlement borrowers who repay online, direct deposit, or from salary deduction.

According to PTPTN's chairman, Datuk Shamsul Anuar Nasarah, the discounts are expected to increase repayments of the loan where online payments are projected to rise to 40% from its current rate of 30%.  Additionally, repayment through the salary scheme is projected to rise from 10% to 20%.
