An i-Card for foreign students studying in Malaysia has been launched today to improve the monitoring mechanism of the students. The card is similar to those carried by foreign workers.
This development is in response to the misuse and abuse of student visas. According to the Deputy Minister Datuk Mary Yap, 32 foreign students were found to be involved in criminal activities and 1,390 of them were caught overstaying or breaching their student pass conditions, last year.
In addition, the ministry also has its in-house enforcement and Inspectorate Department to monitor the management of foreign students by universities and colleges. Private higher learning institutions are required to submit a quarterly report on foreign students management to the ministry.
