Congratulations! You’re officially saying goodbye to your school years. No more baju kurung and white shirt school uniforms, standing in the heat during assembly and facing the chaos of high school drama as you bid a bittersweet farewell.
As you finally get the chance to indulge in a well-deserved break, whether it's binge-watching Netflix at a cafe or lepak with friends, there might also be a hint of anxiety about what lies ahead. It's completely normal to feel this way, but eventually, you'll need to start planning for the future, right?
While pursuing higher education is generally considered the best option you can make to secure your future, the economic downturn has made it increasingly difficult for students to afford it. As a result, many students are hesitant to pursue higher education, as they are concerned about the financial burden.
It’s okay, all these concerns are completely valid. But you also shouldn’t stay feeling bummed, because there are a lot of scholarships and financial aid programmes available out there to help you fund your education. This way, you can pay less for your education fees, and allocate more on spending your money for personal use!
Speaking of, the University of Technology Sarawak offers various scholarships for Foundation studies to fresh-out-of-high school grads like you.
However, if you plan to enroll immediately, take note that the closing date for the intake is the 7th of July, so be sure to apply before the application period is over (you know as they say, better late than never!). Their next intake is in November this year, which gives you plenty of time to prepare before furthering your studies.
There are (2) Foundation programmes at UTS, which are their Foundation in Arts programme and Foundation in Science programme.
Foundation programmes is a one-year course that can help students improve their academic skills, gain a broader understanding of a subject area, and explore different subjects. A Foundation programme is best for those who are looking for a fast-track progression to a Degree and are looking to explore their interests and strengths in different areas of study.
Find out which one among 8 different types of pre-university programmes suits you best.
For Foundation Studies, UTS offers 3 types of Scholarships: The UTS Bursary Scheme for Undergraduates and UTS Bursary Scheme BP40 for Sarawakians which are both for Sarawakians ONLY, and the UTS Bursary Scheme for Foundation which are for non-Sarawakians.
Now, let's find out what each of these scholarship schemes entails.
If you’re a Sarawakian and you’re planning to continue your studies close to home, this financial aid is especially for you.
Once you register under any of the Foundation study programmes in UTS, 50 % of the tuition fees will be automatically funded to you.
This means you’ll only have to pay RM5,000 for the entire programme.
Once you’re tied under this scholarship, you must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0 and a silver Leadership Excellence Award (LEAd) for every semester, to continue being eligible for this scheme.
This scholarship is a great opportunity for Sarawakians who are looking to further their education. The scholarship covers 80% of your tuition fees, so you will only need to pay RM2,000 out of pocket.
Very convenient, kan?
Even if you can’t afford to pay the remaining balance, you can apply for a loan from Yayasan Sarawak or PTPTN. This means that you will not have to worry about asking your parents for money or using your savings.
The condition for this scholarship is, your parent’s household income needs to be under B40 and M40, and you’re not receiving any other scholarships right now.
To be eligible for this scholarship, you must obtain a credit for Bahasa Melayu in SPM or equivalent at UEC / O-Level.
Once you’ve successfully locked the scholarship, you must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0 for every semester, to retain the scheme.
Interested already? Don’t wait too long to decide, because this scholarship is limited to a quota of 100 people ONLY, for Bumiputera and non-Bumiputera respectively.
If you're looking for a change of scenery without having to stray too far from home, this scholarship is perfect for you. The UTS Bursary Scheme For Foundation is offered only for Non-Sarawakians, to ease the burden of residents from West Malaysia who want to experience the land of unique culture and lush rainforests.
In addition to the financial benefits of the scholarship, there are also many other benefits to studying in The Land of Hornbills. Sarawak is a beautiful state with a rich culture and history. The people of Sarawak are friendly and welcoming, and the cost of living is relatively low.
To receive the scholarship, you need to become a student in any of UTS’ foundation programme, and you must obtain a minimum GPA of 2.00 and above to retain the sponsorship for Semester 2 tuition fee.
Please be aware that you must continue your bachelor's studies at UTS University to maintain your scholarship eligibility. If you decide to transfer to another university, you will be required to repay the full scholarship amount. Therefore, it is important to have clear study goals before you proceed!
So, if you’re excited about the idea of studying in a state-of-the-art university surrounded by lush greeneries to kick start your education journey, don’t hesitate further. It’s now or never!
