With so many degree options out there, here are some top reasons why you should study History:
By taking a gander at the historical backdrop of various societies, a History student can develop a superior comprehension of why certain people groups act the way they do. By learning at the different cultures of society, a wide social mindfulness is yours for the taking.
People always think History is about the past and there’s no point wasting time learning about it when we should be moving on. But what kind of direction and vision would you have if you have not learned from your mistakes? The past affects the present and influences the future. This course will help students understand how we have evolved and appreciate the community we live in now.
Do you sometimes go to a coffee shop and eavesdrop at people’s conversations? What do they usually talk about? Probably how terrible the economy and politics is, but do you know the whole story of how it came about? Or are you one of those who condemn without fully grasping how difficult freedom fighters had to struggle to obtain freedom? Well, then History is one course you should dive into, to understand how far we’ve come.

As a Historian, you need to know your history! Well many assume it’s all about memorising, and while that is partly true, once you truly grasp and embrace the stories and cultures behind each one, you’ll find it so much easier to remember, it’ll be like second nature to you.
Gone are the days where teachers would try and turn historical events into tales that would be easy to remember, as at a university level, for the most part, it has typically few contact hours with the lecturer, requiring much more independent research and prodding.
A historian can work in numerous sub-disciplines. While this is definitely an added advantage, you will need to be ready to work in different environments, curating different types of objects, and all the while maintaining and composed sense of knowledge of the history behind the material you’re in charge of!
