Sometimes a short walk down memory lane is all it takes to appreciate all the achievements made today. Now, nearing its 30th year anniversary celebration, Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) traces back its humble beginnings; relishes its triumphs and achievements; and looks forward to changes and challenges of a new season.

“Our focus on business and management education has propelled UUM over the past 30 years,” recalls Prof. Dato’ Dr Mohamed Mustafa Ishak, vice-chancellor of UUM. “It allowed a quality education to be accessible to more people, and in doing so, made the learning experience richer for everyone.”

In 1984, UUM began its mission to providing quality training and education for professionals in the areas of business and management for the local market. Within the last decade, this goal eventually flourished and extended to the international scene when UUM permanently settled in Sintok, Kedah and began to build deeper, global partnerships with foreign universities such as Chiang Mai University of Thailand, Kanagawa University of Japan as well as institutions such as Tekun Nasional and Malaysian Cooperatives Commission (MCC).

“Since the past five years, our student population has kept on growing. UUM is home to nearly 6,000 international students, studying in various programmes, both in undergraduate and postgraduate level,” he said.

The vice-chancellor admits that competition for good students, in Malaysia and abroad, is reaching new levels of intensity and for UUM, this meant refining and creating new services and markets to attract more students.

For this year’s academic semester, the university welcomed over 4,000 new students of which 700 were international students hailing from 38 countries including Indonesia, Thailand, China, Libya, Somalia and Tanzania.

“This can be attributed to the various efforts made by UUM including raising the quality of the academic programmes and progressively transforming the way we deliver our services,” he added.

Faced with a dynamic industry landscape, UUM was able to develop a vision of what their academic brand will be in the future and aligned these with their purpose and values. This is made evident with the setting up of the UUM Offshore Office in China, which enabled mobility among students and academic talent.

Gearing up for Malaysia vision 2020

The vice-chancellor of UUM says preparations for the upcoming anniversary are well under way. To date, the number of UUM alumni had reached 100,000 including the 15,000 graduates who were spread over 42 nations around the world.

“The 30th anniversary celebration will not only bring together past students of the university, it will help us to look back on what we have achieved prepare for the next set of challenges for year 2020,” he said.

Early this year, UUM became an autonomous public university and with the freedom gained, it has pledged to provide its students with up-to-date, world-class teaching and learning facilities.

The university is now working on to attain international accreditation for its business programmes from AACSB (Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, AMBA (Association of MBAs), and EQUIS. It is also concentrating efforts to raise its position on the world rankings through enhancing its flagship programmes and adding advance training at the postgraduate level.
