Malaysian private universities that offer mechanical engineering programmes

Published by Afterschool.my on Aug 26, 2014, 03:13 pm

Jobs in fields that allow engineers to help the world – such as energy, civil and mechanical engineering – are projected to grow. In Malaysia, engineering jobs are aplenty yet the talent pool is small. We need at least 250,000 engineers by 2020. We fall short of this target with a domestic pool of 80,000 engineers.

If you plan to secure a career in this field of study, here is a list of private institutions that offer a 4-year degree programme in mechanical engineering:

The University of Southampton is well known for its excellent track record for teaching engineering in a research-led environment. The university is the top 15 research university in the UK. TheUniversity of Southampton has a strong track record of placing graduates in leading multinational corporations such as Airbus and Rolls-Royce in the aerospace industry, McLaren Racing and Renault F1 team in the automotive industry, as well as Schlumberger and BP in the petroleum industry.

Through its campus in Iskandar, Johor Bahru, students have the chance to attain a degree from a leading UK university for only 60 per cent of the cost. Students enrolling at its Malaysia campus can get to study up to two years at its UK-based university. Furthermore, students will get professional engineering accreditation in both the UK and Malaysia.

The mechanical engineering programme atNilai University focuses on the design and application of thermal, fluid and mechanical power systems and the design, production, and use of machines and tools. It will provide a solid understanding of core concepts including engineering mechanics, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, heat and mass transfer, materials science and engineering, CAD/CAM/CAE and energy management.

Nilai University's engineering programmes feature licensed MATLAB, Simulink, Multisim, AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Ansys, CNC simulator and emulator software. Students will undero training as part of the syllabus on SolidWorks and Anysys software so they can create components with parametic methods and to create assemblies and gain knowledge on computer aided engineering analysis.

mech4

Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) offers a wide range of engineering and technology programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate levels complemented with a strong focus on Research and Development. The programmes are designed with high industry relevance to provide a dynamic learning environment.

UTP offers industrial internship programmes for its students. The students are posted as interns for 28 weeks (approximately 7 months). The length of the internship duration allows students to engage in more significant work assignments and is widely thought as a major strength of the academic curriculum.

mech5

Students taking the mechanical engineering programme at INTI will be prepared for careers in energy transfer and analysis, machine and electromechanical designs, manufacturing and production, ergonomics and man-machine symbiosis, environmental design and analysis as well as new technologies such as robotics and numerical control machining. Furthermore, students will develop business, interpersonal and managerial skills to progress quickly into responsible positions in mechanical or manufacturing industries and their supply chains. The engineering programme atINTI follows the guidelines set by the Engineering Accreditation Council .

Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman(UTAR) was established under the UTAR Education Foundation, a not-for-profit organisation. From over a hundred students, UTARhas now more than 1,000 students in its four campuses in Petaling Jaya, Setapak, Bandar Sungai Long and Kampar, Perak. To ensure high education standards, UTAR created a panel of external examiners that consists of scholars from University of Cambridge, University of Oxford, Harvard University and University of Sydney. The university has participated in and won awards in the Malaysia Robot Contest (ROBOCON) and the MSC Malaysia Huawei Scholastic Awards.

mech8

At Taylor’s School of Engineering, both its foundation and bachelor students are taught through project-based learning, in order to better prepare them for their future jobs as Engineers of their chosen disciplines. The university's course curriculum has been developed and enhanced from our 13-year experience of partnering with University of Birmingham, UK. Mechanical engineering students have to undergo a 12-week industrial training to develop practical and relevant skills for future employment.

mech10

Manipal International University (MIU) is a multidisciplinary university. Its mechanical programme aims to prepare students for the manufacturing, transportation and telecommunications industries. Through this program, students are exposed to the basics of metallurgy and measurement, before tackling complex subjects like machinery, fluid mechanics, and mathematics. This program is based on a problem-solving approach based on actual, industrial issues, thereby training students to be productive in the workplace.

mech11

Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN) is wholly-owned by public-listed Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), one of the largest utility companies in Southeast Asia.
