Han Chiang College's (HCC) application for university college status will be considered by the government. This was stated during Prime Minister Daturk Seri Najib Razak's speech at the Penang Barisan Nasional (BN) Chinese New Year open house, last Monday. The Minister said that HCC could become university college for mass communications.

Established about 13 years ago, HCC is among the first private colleges in Malaysia to have its own broadcast and news website. It offers two foundation, eight diploma and three 3+0 degree programmes.

In 2010, HCC launched two foundation programmes in Communication and Business. Its diploma programmes cover mass communication, broadcast journalism, accounting, business management, logistics management, IT, multimedia communication design and Chinese studies.

For its 3+0 programmes, HCC partners with the University of Wolverhampton, UK for its BA (Hons) Business Management; University of Southern Queensland, AU for Bachelor of Communication; and Teesside University, UK for Creative Digital Media. Teesside University is the first modern university to win the Times Higher award - University of Year and Outstanding Employer Engagement Initiative. The University of Southern Queensland meanwhile is among the pioneers in online (distance) learning with 75 per cent of its students studying online/distance.
