“Engineering is generally regarded as a man’s domain. In my opinion, gender equality is very important. No gender is fixed to a certain job, so why shouldn’t women have the opportunity to develop careers in engineering? I strongly encourage women to be more confident when pursuing their passion in the engineering field to prove this stereotype wrong!” declared Emily Chong Hau Yan, a BEng (Hons) Chemical Engineering student at Heriot-Watt University Malaysia.
Heriot-Watt University Malaysia is committed to widening access for Malaysian women looking to embark on science and engineering-related careers
Heriot-Watt University is highly sought after in the areas of science, engineering, mathematics and data science. As the world’s first mechanics institute and the first in Scotland to enrol women into STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) programmes, it is no stranger to paving the way for gender equality. Consequently, with the opening of the Malaysia campus, the university has made it possible for women in the ASEAN region to gain access to quality teaching and learning.
In its bid to further widen access to and reduce the gender gap in this field, Heriot-Watt University Malaysia introduced the Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) scholarship especially for Malaysian women looking to pursue science and engineering-related careers.
“WISE offers 100% or 50% scholarships for selected science and engineering courses, contingent upon an interview with the university staff,” explained Noor Shieela Kalib, Lecturer from the School of Engineering and Physical Sciences and WISE Scholarship Coordinator. “With this scholarship, Malaysian women in particular will find it easier to obtain a distinguished UK education that will provide them with a solid foundation to pursue successful science and engineering careers, and dispel stereotypes along the way.”
Malaysian women enrolling into Heriot-Watt University Malaysia’s Foundation in Science or Foundation in Business programmes (with the intention to pursue science or engineering-related undergraduate programmes), or its science and engineering-related undergraduate programmes, encompassing Actuarial Science, Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Construction Project Management, Electrical & Electronic Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Psychology, Psychology with Management, Quantity Surveying and Statistical Data Science, are welcome to apply for the scholarship.

The application deadline is 1st April 2020 for the university’s upcoming April intake. In addition to academic excellence, applicants will be evaluated based on their involvement in extra-curricular activities, leadership skills and passion in STEM. They will also be required to submit a one-minute video pitch and a written personal statement as well as undergoing an interview with university staff.
“Being successful is not just about possessing the right skills. It is about having the will, commitment and burning desire to be the best,” encouraged Emily.
Heriot-Watt University Malaysia is presently receiving applications for its April 2020 intake. The university is open seven days a week online with Education Consultants on standby to receive enquiries, which will be answered remotely.
