On the delightful evening of November the 25th, the Kolej Yayasan UEM (KYUEM) Bangsawan Night 2023 unfolded with a warm welcome extended to distinguished guests, including the special guest Datuk Amran Hafiz bin Affifudin, Chairman of UEM Group. The event, hosted by Ayesha Hannah and Jasim Aziz, aimed to showcase and preserve Malay cultural heritage through the annual cultural performance, "The Bangsawan Night".
The night commenced with a prayer recitation by Taufiq Lu Bin Asmadi, setting a peaceful tone for the ceremony. The welcoming speech by Mr. Sharmmen Raj, the Director of Bangsawan, expressed gratitude to the attendees and set the stage for the CEO of Kolej Yayasan UEM's speech by Puan Mazyu Sherina Yusof. Her speech emphasised the importance of preserving Malay traditions and cultural heritage. The special guest, Datuk Amran Hafiz was then invited to the stage to officiate the night by hitting the gong.
The Bangsawan Night celebrated its much-anticipated performances, representing each house—Sapphire, Diamond, Garnet, and Topaz—bringing captivating stories and legends to life. The first performance by the House of Sapphire, depicted the legend of "Puteri Gunung Ledang," exploring themes of love, loyalty, and sacrifice. The emotional and captivating show was followed by the House of Courage, Diamond, presented the tale of "Cucuk Sanggul: Sumpahan Kasih Puteri," receiving praise for its emotional depth. After an intermission, Garnet showcased the legend of Mahsuri, delivering a beautifully emotional performance that captivated the audience. The House of Honour, Topaz, concluded the night with the story of "Puteri Walinong Sari," leaving the audience eager to discover the winner. The judges provided valuable feedback, adding to the excitement of the event.
Special performances by KYUEM students, including Hayden Hansannon, Chai Jun Heng, Tan Yii Jie, and Anshula Pooja, added musical charm to the evening. Then, a video presentation by the Bangsawan 2023 Committee showcased behind-the-scenes moments and garnered appreciation. As the videos ended, anticipation filled the air, leaving everyone wondering which house would emerge victorious on this year's Bangsawan Night.
The award ceremony started off with the presentation of traditional attire awards. The houses, Sapphire, Diamond, Garnet, and Topaz, each received a token of appreciation for their outstanding contributions to the Bangsawan Night 2023 video teaser. The teaser achieved significant success on social media, reflecting the Houses' dedication.The ceremony recognised outstanding participants in various categories, including Best Antagonist, Best Supporting Actor/Actress, Best Actor/Actress, Best Choreography, Best Costume, and Best Script. The coveted Best Director Award was presented to deserving recipients.
The moment of truth arrived with the announcement of the Bangsawan Night 2023 winners. The House of Enthusiasm, Garnet, emerged as the overall champion, claiming the Bangsawan trophy. Individual awards and prizes were also distributed, including cash prizes, hampers, and the prestigious Bangsawan trophy.
The special guests, including Datuk Amran Hafiz Bin Affifudin, Yang Mulia Tunku Dato’ Paduka Ja’afar Laksmana Bin Tunku Nong, and Dato Mohamed Nasri Sallehuddin, graced the stage to present awards and express their appreciation. Puan Mazyu Sherina Yusof received a token of appreciation for her significant contribution from the Bangsawan committee.
The event concluded with a heartfelt thanks to all participants, sponsors, and attendees. The emcees bid farewell, expressing gratitude for the success of KYUEM Bangsawan Night 2023, promising to meet again in the future.
In summary, the event successfully celebrated and preserved Malay cultural heritage through mesmerising performances of Malay theatre, recognising outstanding contributions, and fostering a sense of unity and pride among KYUEM students.
