But engineering is a big field and has a lot of specialisations within. So, which are the top 10 fields?

1. Chemical Engineering 

If you want to be an engineer in the field, it is easier if you love chemistry. Career opportunities for graduates of this fields can vary based on experience and skills.

2. Engineering Technology

Students are a little confused about this field. If you are confused, here is a way to make it easier to understand it. Say you have a hammer. It works fine but it isn’t fast enough, the handle can break, it will rust, and it takes a lot of body work and energy to operate. How would you improve it or make it operate automatically, and faster? That is basically what it means to be a technology engineer.

3. Mechanical Engineering

This field is a popular one because of the prospects for career opportunities. You can work in the automotive industry, aircraft maintenance and other fields.

Mechanical engineering has a subspecialty for the oil and gas industry.

4. Computer Engineering

This field continues to be among the most popular field in engineering because, let’s face it computers are almost everything now. You guys got it right.

5. Civil Engineering

6. Automotive engineering

7. Petroleum Engineering 

Employment opportunities for this field are good because Malaysia has big operators in this industry. Besides Petronas, the main name in Malaysia and an international name as well, there are other companies like Shell and Exxon and other international players. There are also many local companies that have a significant impact on the oil and gas industry locally and regionally.

8. Electrical Engineering 

Electricity is a highly-demanded commodity in Malaysia and the industry, despite the apparent monopoly, still enjoys some competition. There are three main suppliers of electricity in Malaysia, Tenaga National Berhad – in Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah Electricity – operators in the state of Sabah, and Sarawak Energy is the main operator in Sarawak.

But electrical engineering isn’t limited to power supply. It also addresses design, functionality, maintenance and repairs of machines and electronics that need electricity to operate.

9. Mechatronics Engineering

One of the main reasons why this field is becoming more and more popular is because it provides expertise that impact a wide range of industries like automotive, medical equipment, electronics manufacturing, servicing oil and gas, transportation, military and more fields.

10. Aerospace Engineering 

There are many publications that can tell you why this field is popular. Putting people in the sky or in space is not easy. But it starts here.

You, as a future engineer, have the responsibility to learn more, explore resources that will give you more experience and you need to have unique expertise.
