Most people on earth would have dreamt of becoming a doctor at least once in their life. Majority of students, study medicine with the aspiration of becoming a doctor. After all, doctors are some of the desirable medical positions right now.
However, a medical degree does not signify that you have to become a doctor. In fact, there are an abundance of non-doctor jobs an individual with a medical degree can consider to pursue with!
Researcher
Medical researchers design and conduct studies to investigate human diseases and methods to prevent and treat them. They also conduct research aimed at improving overall human health. They often use clinical trials and other investigative methods to reach their findings.
Salary range – RM 5k to RM 10k
Health economist
Health economists are professionals who investigate how our resources are used in health care. They also focus on the distribution of resources and the maintenance of occupational health in the health care system. They may work in the public side of health care or they may be employed by privately owned companies.
Salary range – RM 8k to RM 16k
Lecturer
Put your hard-earned medical knowledge to good use by training a new generation of students. As a lecturer or teacher, you can teach medical subjects in universities or teach science subjects such as biology and chemistry at college or secondary level. So, even if you don’t become a doctor, you can still do your part to improve the country’s medical profession.
Salary range – RM 4k to RM 8k
Medical journalist/writer
A medical journalist/writer is a person who applies the principles of clinical research in developing clinical trial documents that effectively and clearly describe research results, product use, and other medical information. The medical writers develop any of the five modules of the Common Technical Document.
Community advisor
As a community advisor, your duty is to treat and advocate for the health of the community as a whole instead of focusing on specific individuals. Community advisors study trends and patterns within the community to look at possible health risks and form analytical solutions to address said risk. In order to succeed in the job, you must have a strong love for medicine as well as statistics.
Salary range – RM 5k to RM 8k
While a medical degree provides you with vast knowledge, there are plenty of transferable skills that can be useful in other jobs as well. Whether you choose to stay in the medical field but far away from the emergency room, or you buckle down saving lives every day, make sure you do your groundwork before making a decision. Good luck!
