Exercise Therapists are in charge of developing exercise therapies which are plans of physical activities designed and prescribed for specific therapeutic goals.
More than your average gym trainer, an Exercise Therapist is equipped with the knowledge the human body including the mental and physical benefits of exercising. With that said, they are licensed to prescribe a series of exercise session either for the patient’s fitness or rehabilitation. They are regarded as advisors who is responsible to develop a healthy lifestyle or diet for their patients to improve their medical condition. Rated as the highest among Asian countries for chronic heart problems and obesity, Malaysia is in need of more Exercise Therapists than ever.

What skills do you need to become an Exercise Therapist?
Motivation plays a crucial role in helping the patients to feel better and heal faster. Some patients may progress slower than others and vice versa, but every progress made deserves to be acknowledged and recognised. In turn, these will encourage them to perform even better on the next session.
How is their progress and performance? When is their next session? Will they be able to continue or should they seek another practitioner? Your patients may or may not be asking you countless questions after each session and you will need to tell them the necessary information effectively to avoid any misunderstanding.
As an Exercise Therapist, you will need to empathise on your patient’s condition. You will also need to get a clear picture of their condition before you are able to determine which therapy suits them the best to improve their performance.
What field(s) of study should you choose to become an Exercise Therapist?
What are the requirements to be an Exercise Therapist?
Candidates will need to at least possess a degree in Sports Science, Biology, Psychology, Physiotherapy, Nutrition and Dietetics or any of the relevant field. You would also need to obtain a license to practice Exercise Therapy in Malaysia.
There is no set working hours for an Exercise Therapist as it depends on the appointed therapy sessions with the patient, planning a therapy session, determining what therapy your client may need and more. You may have to work on weekends and even in the evenings.
