In this era of reality TV shows that celebrate remarkably talented individuals, how well do we know talents' importance in our choice of educational and professional growth?

What is talent? I bet we are rarely precise about what this term means.

quote Getting stuck in a course or a career that is uninteresting makes a person feel like a sell-out --- it just leaves them more unsure of their capabilities.

"Innate talent are the impressive abilities that spontaneously emerge at remarkably early ages. Whereas acquired talent are the specific abilities you learn through education, observation, training or experience."

"Innate and acquired talent are closely linked together and when combined, greatly influences one's attitude towards work, "he explains.

While early bloomers exist, there is no such thing as an "untalented"person. Just because one person displays talent early, doesn't mean the others don't have it. Hence it is wrong for parents or educators to suggest limits on what people can ultimately achieve.

He then concludes that the best time to be aware of your innate talents is during pre-university. By acquiring expertise relevant to your capabilities, a person can enhance his performance.

"Talent enables a person to become better, faster, " he emphasized. "The best time to be aware of your talents is when you're young because you have the time to do something about it."

Getting stuck in a course or a career that is uninteresting makes a person feel like a sell-out --- it just leaves them more unsure of their capabilities. "Misfits are people who are unaware of their talents and thereby make choices (educational or professional) that are totally a mismatch with their interest."

"People who are doing something that matters to them are not afraid of hard work. Usually these are people who are using their talents, skills and abilities in service of the right cause," he adds.

He then suggests that parents, educators and even school counselors must learn how to spot talents early on. "There are many talents from an individual perspective. Aside from singing, there are other types of talent such as entrepreneurial talent, sales talent, specialist talent, leadership, and so forth."

According to Dr Shah, talents take time to develop hence it is important to also identify key competencies that need to be improved to make that talent shine.
