UNITAR International University and Maxis Berhad (Maxis), Malaysia's communications service provider, inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) which will see the two parties collaborate on six key areas aimed at supporting students in technology and entrepreneurship development. The collaboration will also enable UNITAR students to be connected 24/7 via WiFi services as well as take advantage of Maxis’ full suite of integrated solutions.
The MoU was signed by Wan Ahmad Saifuddin Bin Wan Ahmad Radzi, Chief Executive Officer, Unitar Capital Sdn. Bhd together with Fitri Abdullah, Head of Maxis Business Services, Maxis Berhad and witnessed by Prof. Dr. Abdul Razak Habib, Vice Chancellor of UNITAR International University.

Wan Ahmad Saifuddin Bin Wan Ahmad Radzi, Chief Executive Officer, Unitar Capital Sdn. Bhd and En. Muhammad Lukman bin Musa, Chief Operating Officer and Chief Financial Officer, Unitar Capital Sdn. Bhd.
Of the six key points of agreement; the MoU consists of four programmes and two ‘physical areas’ of understanding with the communications giant. The programmes offered from Maxis include scholarship opportunities, , an avenue for UNITAR’s students to enrol into the Maxis Internship Programme, sponsorships for all types of student body, club or society organised activities, and the possibility for interested students to enrol into Maxis’ Entrepreneurship Programme which will provide the necessary knowledge and skills to become an authorised agent.
The two ‘physical areas’ are the placement of a Maxis Service Counter (Distribution Point) at the new campus, in addition to the placement of Wi-Fi Hotspots at the new main-campus, and eventually at UNITAR International University’s (currently 9) Independent Regional Centre (IRC’s) across Malaysia respectively.
Wan Ahmad said, “This partnership with Maxis will support UNITAR International University’s three key objectives which are to have the best ecosystem, to actively produce the most employable graduates and to create a university of sustainability and growth. With the placement of Wi-Fi Hotspots at the present and future main campus, and a dedicated Maxis Distribution Point at the new campus, it will allow for greater wireless connectivity within the campus, especially important in today’s online world of which our students and staff will benefit greatly. Furthermore, with the offer of Internship Programmes and Scholarship Programmes available with our arrangement through Maxis, we provide direct industry linkages which are available to students and for those budding entrepreneurs enrol into the Maxis’ Entrepreneurship Programme.”
UNITAR is part of the Maxis Integrated Partner in Education (MIPE) programme, a fully integrated communications suite of solutions for tertiary institutions and their populations. The programme, which was launched in April 2011, is designed to enhance campus communications through a wide range of products and services that will provide campus communities with an enriching education experience.
“At Maxis, we recognise that education is a critical sector where advancement in communications and technology can play a vital role in promoting excellence. More importantly, there is a need to create value through innovation, the best products and experience. Our collaboration with UNITAR is another step forward in our efforts in encouraging tertiary institutions to be part of the MIPE programme. We certainly hope that the entire UNITAR campus community comprising faculty, students and administrative staff will take advantage of our full range of integrated solutions to enrich their lives,” said Fitri.
UNITAR International University was established in 1997, and represents one of the first Private Higher Educational Institutions in the country. In addition to its main campus located at Leisure Commerce Square, Petaling Jaya the university collaborates with numerous Independent Regional Centres across the country with a population of more than 9,000 students in 60 academic programmes.
Commenting on UNITAR’s activities, Wan Ahmad said, “UNITAR International University underwent a rebranding exercise which was launched by Datuk Seri Khaled Nordin, Minister of Higher Education on October 18, 2012 and we will also be proudly moving to our new campus located in Kelana Jaya in the second quarter of 2013 . Furthermore, in January, 2013, where our next intake will take place, we will have a new addition to the UNITAR International University family which is the programme on Business and Accounting. With this new brand, we are confident to achieve our target of 600 students in our January 21, 2013 intake and 3500 students during the June intake.”
