Today with the COVID-19 pandemic, every education institution is struggling to progress towards online learning. Online learning has become the new norm in efforts of slowing down the spread of this deadly virus. However, as can be witnessed, online learning is not easy. It requires everything to be digitalised and it requires educators to be highly knowledgeable on technology usage.
Despite various initiatives and funds provided by the government in an effort of making learning more digital in the past several decades, research shows that teachers and lecturers are still skeptical and reluctant to integrate technology in the classroom. Studies show that their use of technology in the classroom was limited to PPT slides.
As a result, with the current situation, students are not receiving the education they deserve as educators are just beginning to adapt to the new norm of online learning. While they struggle to adapt and deliver content efficiently, there is one university in Malaysia that has been focusing on open distance learning since 2006. This university allows you to study at the comfort of your own home. This university is known as Wawasan Open University (WOU). The main campus is located in Penang.
Wawasan Open University (WOU) offers an extensive choice of degree programmes for SPM and STPM leavers. Students can opt to pursue their diploma, undergraduate or even postgraduate programme. While many universities in Malaysia do not provide options for students to do their undergraduate part-time, Wawasan Open University (WOU) allows you to do that. You can also choose your number of credits per semester. It is especially convenient for working adults.
However, to ensure that optimal learning is taking place, Wawasan Open University (WOU) prepares qualified lecturers who are always ready to facilitate you. You can request to have more than five tutorial sessions per semester with the lecturers via phone and email. The course material is all uploaded on the Learning Management System (LMS) and you will get access to the content anytime of the day. All materials including assignments, activities and presentations will be accessible in the LMS. In addition, you will have access to the e-library 24/7 where you can download other additional material.
On top of that, Wawasan Open University (WOU) also holds out various scholarships up to RM16,000 for eligible students who are pursuing their diploma or undergraduate programme. Aside from the scholarship, you also stand a chance at securing multiple bursary awards offered by the university. Above all, a wide range of loans and incentives are also offered by various agencies to support education at Wawasan Open University (WOU). For more information on the scholarship, click here.
While many may worry and be dubious on the concept of online learning or open distance learning, it is important to note that Wawasan Open University (WOU) programmes are accredited by MQA. After all, for better or worse, online learning is the future and Wawasan Open University (WOU) along with its highly qualified tutors and course materials provide you with numerous opportunities and support in attaining a quality education that you deserve.
