In spite of the problems the field is facing in recent years, there is still much interest in medical studies. Now, Malaysians have more options to access medical education locally and regionally than ever. Additionally, students continue to go to countries like Russia and Egypt for a medical degree. Malaysians’ interest in the UK, Australia and the US may change dramatically because of the currency exchange rate.
However, it is not always about mainstream medicine or human health. Here are other courses related to medicine:
Students are smarter and capable of understanding the importance of psychology in the market place. There seems to be an increasing interest in the field because of market demand. Institutions that offer psychology are helping parents and students understand the field even better. Of course, Afterschool.my is also trying to do its part and help students understand what does it mean to be a psychologist and how can graduates of this field pursue a career.
When studying biomedical sciences, students are opened to the opportunities in various fields like medicine, pharmacology, lab technologies, information technology in the field of healthcare, communicating and educating the public, law, and environmental impact. Therefore, the interest is understandably high because it is a multi-discipline field.
In 2014, actuarial science was the most searched for course on afterschool.my. In 2015, it went to second place. In 2016, the course dropped to fifth place. This field is still relatively new in Malaysia and the future still holds great value in the future as the government is paying attention to areas like insurance and investment.
The field of Pharmacy allows graduates to have a wide variety of career opportunities in the healthcare industry and out of it, stable careers with great mobility and flexibility, pharmacists can work for both private and public sector and still earn well, and - of course – there is the sense of prestige and social status, just like medical doctors. These reasons are few of the many reasons why the field continues to be popular.
Chemical engineering is one of the four main branches of engineering. It is applied chemistry that focuses on using chemical reactions to produce useful materials and/or solve problems that impact us on daily basis.
The Oil and Gas industry is closely related to chemical engineering.
This field doesn’t only focus on our dental hygiene, it expands into several specialities like paediatric dentistry, cosmetic dentistry, dental material, orthodontics and more. That is why there is much interest in the field due to job prospects.
Malaysia is one the of the world most recognised names in the field of low cost commercial air travel. With companies like AirAsia, Malindo Air, FireFly, MAS, and MAS Wings, this business is expected to expand exponentially because of the transformation of air travel and affordability to the masses. With bigger business, there is bigger employment market and bigger demand for skilled and qualified professionals who would ensure regular maintenance of the aircrafts and ensure the safety of the passengers.
There is also the vertical aviation (Helicopters) business which is just as important.
It is a multi-disciplinary field that complements the criminal justice system, medical field, computer technologies and other fields.
Several the courses that performed close to the top 10 but fell short are: Mathematics, law, engineering technology, physiotherapy, computer engineering and mechanical engineering.
