The Day When Childhood Dreams Came True

Published by Afterschool.my on Jul 31, 2013, 01:50 pm

It’s been two weeks now since I've been in Cambridge, the dream school when I was young back in secondary school. It feels so surreal, that dream is not just wishes upon the stars, and it can be reached and achieved.

There is a joke here saying that the most frequent topic being discussed here in Britain, or to start a conversation with someone is about the weather. The weather here is changeable (Here I’m, adopting the culture!), you might have chilly temperature in the morning, scorching hot in the afternoon, freezing cold.

when the strong wind blows at night.

On the first week in Cambridge, I've met lots of people from different countries and different parts of the world including Americans, British, Hong Kong, Taiwanese, Egyptians, Italians, French, German, Singaporean, Chinese, and Canadian etc.

There are approximately 350 participants in this summer programme, a total of 5 Malaysians including myself.

There is a story behind every part of Cambridge, from a library architecture design signifies an open book with flowing of knowledge; Mathematical bridge by the popular myth was designed and built by Sir Isaac Newton without any bolts or nuts, however it is later claimed to be untrue that the bridge is built after Newton died.

The arrangement of timbers is a series of tangents that describe the arc of the bridge, with radial members to tie the tangents together and triangulate the structure, making it rigid and self-supporting; the Corpus Clock or “time eater” was built with sophisticated mechanism, the hour is tolled by the sound of a chain clanking into a small wooden coffin hidden in the back of the clock which intended to be a reminder of human mortality; the laboratory where DNA was discovered by James Watson and Francis Crick; to an apple tree which inspired the discovery of gravity by Sir Isaac Newton. All of these is just simply amazing and I’m fascinated by all these footprints left behind, it feels like the names whom we are so familiar with in the text books just came alive.

It’s already middle of the first term, soon the first exam for first module will take place. The teaching method in Cambridge is different in a way that students are not taught about facts, but to challenge the facts, freeing up their minds to be able to think.

A lot of times, “think” is most frequently used word in a lecture, there is never a definite answer to a question or case study thrown to you, and all you need is to think, think and THINK.

Cambridge is a beautiful place and definitely a conducive environment to study. As I walk down the streets which brilliant scholars such as Charles Darwin, Sir Isaac Newton, Stephen Hawking, Niels Bohr used to walk on the same path, it further inspires me that the knowledge I have now is just a mere drop in a vast ocean, there is still a lot more to be learned. It’s such an eye opener and definitely widens my perspective horizon.

A question to be pondered by all including myself: As the world becoming more competitive, have we read enough books to be able to compete internationally?
