There is an obvious need for graduates to have a credible education as they enter the workforce.

And the best global education providers are in beautiful Aotearoa, which means the land of the long white cloud.

Ranked number 1 in preparing students for the future and with all eight of its universities ranked in the top 3% in the world, pursuing a bachelor’s degree from New Zealand would not only mean quality education and doors to desired carrier positions, but the opportunity to experience a whole new culture and lifestyle.

With such an established education framework, it comes as no surprise that New Zealand is a country well into its advancement in the creative and innovative field.

Making a start in Malaysia

Getting accepted into top universities can be a challenge but enrolling in a prestigious New Zealand university is now more possible than ever. You can start your journey to New Zealand in Malaysia with the International Foundation Year (IFY) programme.

The IFY is a pre-university qualification developed by members of the Northern University Consortium (NCUK), and it is a qualification recognised by all eight New Zealand universities. The IFY programme offers Malaysian students the flexibility to begin their New Zealand academic journey by enrolling in one of more than 80 global accredited NCUK centres around the world, including at Tenby Schools Malaysia.

Ben Burrowes, Education New Zealand’s Regional Director for Asia says, “The International Foundation Year is an extremely important programme to build students’ confidence before undertaking their journey in a foreign country. We want all of our international students to be in the strongest position possible ahead of arriving in New Zealand and we believe our partnership with NCUK provides a platform to enable this.”

According to Burrowes, Malaysia remains a very important partner to New Zealand, with student enrolment in New Zealand’s universities increasing steadily since 2014. Knowing that Malaysian students are highly digitally capable and interested, he believes Malaysian students will have no problem adapting to the changes, course modules and new curriculum when they begin university.

The programme allows learners to study subjects related to their future degree choice from four currently available pathways which are business, engineering, humanities and science. By completing this programme, students gain a myriad of skills such as communication skills, interpersonal skills and time management that helps them acclimate to university life smoothly.

The biggest advantage upon completion of the programme is that learners are guaranteed a spot to study with one of the eight New Zealand universities.

“This partnership also allows international students from Malaysia to gain entry and effectively prepare for studies at the University of Auckland, a top-100 ranked university, even if they do not initially meet the entry requirements directly coming out of high school. The step from high school to university can feel like a big jump, especially when considering studies outside of your home country. However, the International Foundation Year (IFY) will ensure that students are academically prepared to manage studies at the university level,” says the International Manager of the University of Auckland, Ben McNally-Burn.

Ranked 85th in the world in the QS World Rankings 2022 and Number 1 in New Zealand, The University of Auckland offers high-quality research and teaching across the full range of disciplines

The pathway to your New Zealand dream

Jann Musa, Head of Future Pathways at International Schools Partnership (ISP) says, “The International Foundation Year (IFY) Programme is highly practical. Students can specialise in the field of study of their choice in a much shorter time. It also shortens their time finishing a degree. A typical Pre-U course can take 12 to 18 months. But with this programme, students save up to 9 months. With the extra 9 months at hand, a student may gain a competitive edge by perhaps having to go through work-based learning or work placement earlier than others. “

To be eligible for the 9-month IFY programme, students must complete five modules in IGCSE or SPM with an average grade of B or C. Students are required to study three modules related to the degree they want to pursue in university with the additional subject of English for Academic Purposes (EAP). The assessment method is based on 30% coursework and 70% examination.

Students will be able to focus on specific subjects through the IFY programme in Tenby Setia Eco Park

As part of the International Schools Partnership (ISP) Malaysia, Tenby is one of the few educational groups to incorporate a dual-stream system. The unique model of combining local (Sekolah Sri Tenby) and international education (Tenby International School) ensures that the campuses offer a diverse environment where students can embrace a variety of different perspectives while also being prepared to thrive in a globalised world.

Tenby Schools (as part of the International Schools Partnership) recognise the importance of providing the right equipment and environment to cultivate the spirit of resilience and confidence. Jann Musa shares that for ISP schools, learning must be a fun process that helps foster healthy competitiveness, stimulate creativity, and inspire students to be successful.
