TAR UMT students win again in the MyTIGER Values Art Competition, an art and design contest initiated by the Maybank Foundation since 2018. This time around, two students namely Phung Jie Hua and Robin Soon Wei Ming, both from the Bachelor of Creative Multimedia (Hons) programme, secured the 1st prize and the Jury Award, respectively, under the Photo Imaging category.
Jie Hua, proudly stands beside his 1st prize-winning artwork, ‘Hands of Creation.’
Jie Hua won the top prize for his ‘Hands of Creation’ artwork, where he drew inspiration from Benny, a prominent digital artist from Benny Productions. The piece depicts multiple human hands crafting vibrant savanna islands, symbolising the active role humans play in environmental stewardship. It highlights the importance of teamwork in shaping and preserving our natural world, emphasising that collective efforts and collaborations are essential for sustainable practices. The artwork aligns with Maybank’s core values and supports the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 15 (Life on Land), SDG 13 (Climate Action), and SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production). It aims to inspire viewers to recognise their role in creating a sustainable future and to actively engage in protecting the environment.
Robin, displays his award-winning artwork, ‘Giant Step.’
Robin's piece, ‘Giant Step,’ was inspired by a concept from Pinterest featuring a large animal in a downtown cityscape. Drawing on Maybank's tiger logo, the artwork emphasises the tiger's strength and resilience. Set in Chinatown, the black-and-white palette evokes a sense of nostalgia and timelessness, highlighting the area's rich cultural heritage. The monochromatic approach accentuates textures and details, with the tiger symbolising protection and unity. The absence of colour emphasises the tiger's role as a guardian of tradition, blending past and present, and representing Malaysia's diverse cultures. This artwork captures cultural resilience, reminding viewers of the importance of preserving heritage while embracing progress.
When asked about their preparation, Jie Hua mentioned, “My digital illustration lecturer, Mr Tham Chen Tong, encouraged me to join the MyTIGER Values Art Competition. He provided us with detailed information about the competition, including guidelines and themes, and conducted practical sessions to help us refine our skills and better prepare our submissions. Additionally, my image manipulation lecturer, Mr Kong Yee Fong, consistently encourages us to participate in external competitions to improve ourselves. He also teaches us a wide range of design theories and technical photo imaging skills, which have been invaluable in developing our creative abilities.”
