Survey says experience outweighs education qualifications

  • University students and graduates must partake in internship opportunities and gain overseas experience through exchange programmes.

When it comes to securing a job, work experience is more important than education for individuals aged 25 and below, according to survey conducted by Randstad, one of the world's largest recruitment and HR services providers. Seventy-six per cent (76%) of the 405 respondents, Malaysian employees, believed experienced is valuable when landing a job.

"In today's workforce, employers are looking beyond a young person's qualifications. They are also seeking the experience the potential employee will bring and how it will help the development and growth of their organisation,"said Randstad Malaysia director, Jasmin Kaur.

Furthermore, 63% of the respondents believed it was more difficult for younger job seekers to find a suitable job, despite 74% believing it is good for companies to actively recruit from this age group. In addition, 73% believe that young people often accept jobs below their level of education.

"Due to their young age and limited working experience, it is not surprising that many are of the opinion that this group of job seekers are facing more difficulties securing a job,"she added.
