  • The government is running a study to investigate the amount of public and private universities required by the country in order to produce the desired number of graduates.
  • This study is also to maintain the quality of the universities in Malaysia and strengthen Malaysian education in general.
  • Building new universities as well as welcoming foreign universities to open up brances in Malaysia are amongst the proposed ideas to build the higher education sector of Malaysia.
  • The Higher Education Ministry's plan is to enrol 150,000 international students in Malaysia by the year 2015, and 200,000 by 2020. As of April, there are currently 86,000 international students.
  • Currently, the ratio of university to population in Malaysia is about 1: 400,000 compared to 1: 200,000 in the USA. Having said that, Malaysia falls short in higher education accessibility with only 40% while the USA enjoys 60 - 70% accessibility.
  • There are 20 public universities and 52 private institutions of higher learning in the country - comprising 25 universities, 22 university colleges and five branch campuses – apart from over 400 private colleges.
