From September 1 onwards, schools will be re-opened in stages for face-to-face Teaching and Learning according to The Ministry of Education Malaysia (MOE). This decision was made taking into consideration the increasing vaccination rate among teachers, administrators and support staff at schools.
In the official statement released by MOE, it is stated that “As of July 16, 2021, a total of 253,366 teachers and administrators (61.30%) and 10,876 support staff (46.3%) have received at least 1 dose of their vaccinations.”
In addition, the MOE also stated that they will take into account the risk assessment by the MOH and NSC to see if there is a need to make changes to the date scheduled. If there are any changes, relevant parties will be notified in advance. Further details on the opening of the school for face-to-face sessions will be released at least one week before the school re-opens. Students must continue with home-based teaching and learning for at least another two months.
Although decision was made in order to allow students receive the education they deserve, teachers, parents as well as students are feeling restless. Most teachers have been vaccinated with only a single dose and kindergarten/primary schools students have yet been vaccinated. Schools were closed while cases were in their four digits. With the spike in cases and a consistent five digit cases daily in addition to the spread of the deadly Delta Variant across Malaysia, no doubt majority perceive this as a wrong decision.
