Veveonah Mosibin, a student from Sabah, went viral a month ago for spending 24 hours on a tree to sit for her exams.
She revealed that she managed to achieve a CGPA of 3.50 in a recent interview. While many students struggle to ace their examination in comfortable learning environment, Veveonah has proved that nothing can get in the way of studies.
Initially, she built her ‘internet’ hut on a hill close to her living area where she could receive good internet connection. However, after being hit by strong winds and heavy rain few days before her exams, the hut collapsed.

She then resorted to the top of a tree just to stay connected to the internet.
To create a space for her to sit for online exams, she crafted a wooden platform across the tree branches and set up a mosquito net to keep the bugs out. Other than the typical online exam essentials, she also brought mosquito repellent, some food and water to stay on the tree for long hours.

Her YouTube video, titled ‘24 Hours On Tree Challenge’, showed how she slept on the tree and almost got bitten by a hornet just to sit for her exams.
This inspiring video soon went viral and hit 700k views. It even went onto international headline, where her story was told on BBC.
Since then, her life went through many positive changes in a short amount of time. Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), where she is currently pursuing Foundation in Science, has offered her full scholarship if she decides to continue studying bachelor’s degree with them.

In addition, Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is now working on improving internet connection for her village in Sabah.
Shopee has also delivered gifts all the way to her village, hoping to help her with her future videos. In the unboxing video, Veveonah received a new tripod, ring light, power bank, laptop cooler and even a brand-new laptop from different sponsors.

No doubt, Veveonah is a great role model for many and she definitely deserves all these recognitions for her efforts in overcoming the hardship in her life. That being said, it is time for Malaysia to step up in rural area development so that no students are left behind.
