Prestariang Technology Sdn Bhd, a wholly owned subsidiary of Prestariang Bhd and Yayasan Pelajaran Johor Holdings Sdn Bhd (YPJH) have created a joint venture to set up a new academy focused on training students for the oil and gas industry.

To be called the Malaysian Petroleum Academy, the institution is expected to produce 5,000 graduates with skills and knowledge relevant to the industry's growing demands.

Starting May this year, the academy will offer free six-month vocational and technical courses to prepare students for jobs at the Refinery and Petrochemical Integrated Development (RAPID) project near Pengerang, Kota Tinggi.

The free courses will be offered to poor yet deserving students from age 17 to 25. Courses to be offered are welding, electrical, maintenance, scaffolding and draughtsmanship.

For the first year, the academy is expected to train 1,000 students which may double the following year.
