  • United Kingdom as the safest place to study and Israel as the least safe destination country
  • Last year, 13,982 Malaysians studied in the UK and Ireland
Base on a worldwide poll survey conducted by the British Council, students perceive the United Kingdom as the safest place to study and Israel as the least safe destination country.Runners-up include Canada, the United States, Germany, New Zealand, Singapore and Germany. Malaysia has 696 students in Canada, 654 in Germany, 2,270 in New Zealand and 4,010 in Singapore.
UK’s multicultural nature was the main reason cited for its safe reputation. Strict gun ownership laws, good medical care, and a relatively low crime rate also contributed to the UK’s highly safe status.
This is evident by Malaysia’s growing student population in the UK and Ireland. Last year, 13,982 students are taking higher education studies in these countries. This number is expected to increase further after the British Embassy of Malaysia has made visa rules for Malaysians easier.
The US was regarded unsafe due to high police presence and relaxed gun laws. Nevertheless, this has not deterred Malaysians from studying in the US. In 2011, student population reached 6,600, an 8.1% increase over the previous year.
Israel meanwhile was ranked most unsafe due to the perceived threat of terrorist attacks and human rights violations, while South Africa was identified as having a perceived high volume of street crime.
The survey, which was an online forum, received some 845 student respondents from over 80 countries.
