The nursing profession is a noble one. Nurses are an integral part of the health-care team, working with doctors and other professionals to provide medical care to patients.
A nurse manager is an administrator who guides or supervises nurses, and collaborates with other professionals to ensure that the best care is provided.
Nurse manager Chow Wei Teng works in one of the wards at Ara Damansara Medical Centre. She studied Nursing at the Ramsay Sime Darby Healthcare (RSDH) College, an experience which not only exposed her to various disciplines, but has also given her a chance to improve her confidence on communication and nursing skills.
“There is always an experienced tutor to guide us in the classroom and a clinical instructor to advise and mentor us while we were posted in clinical settings, said Chow.
Besides academic and practical skills, she said, another important aspect she learnt was critical thinking and emotional intelligence, which are two vital skills needed for her challenging job.
As a nurse manager, she is in charge of the operations of the department and is responsible for the management of activities in the unit.
“We face many challenges every day, but the satisfaction of seeing my team grow and the recovery of my patients encourages me to strive for the better.”
Chow chose to become a nurse manager as she wanted to guide younger nurses and help them achieve their dreams, and at the same time, it was also her passion to able to assist her patients in their recovery.
“Throughout my three years at RSDH, case discussion with the tutors and clinical instructors were often held. I learnt the most during these sessions.”
Chow said the three components of leadership, empowerment and engagement, which she learnt and experienced at RSDH, were equally important for nurses.
“Leadership plays a big role in staff morale and the workplace environment. While empowering nurses in their daily role, it creates engagement among the nurses. Nurses who are empowered and engaged can respond to challenges better. Empowerment and engagement will lead to a positive working environment that will improve the quality of care provided to the patients,” she said.
RSDH College offers programmes in nursing and allied health sciences. The college is known for its excellence in nursing education, and for nurturing allied health sciences professionals who are competent and industry ready.
Among the programmes available from the School of Nursing are Bachelor of Science (Hons) Contemporary Nursing 2+0, Diploma in Nursing and Diploma in Nursing (Assistant Nurse Conversion).
All of the Diploma programmes offered by RSDH are recognized by the Higher Education Ministry. Its courses are certified ISO 9001:2008 and are accredited by the Malaysian Qualification Agency.
There are three intakes in a year in April, July and October. Registration is open for the October intake. The college is open from Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. Students can walk in to find out more about the courses at the campus.
