Currently, the ratio is ONE dentist to 5,100 citizens which is a serious issue as studies show that 75% of school children have dental problems that can potentially escalate to a complex problem in the future.

A plan is set by Malaysian authorities to produce 1,100 dentists annually for the next five years aiming at improving the gap ratio to ONE dentist to every 3,000 citizens by 2018. The previous numbers are about 600 – 700 dentists a year coming from 6 public universities and 7 private universities and colleges.

Many officials expect to face challenges in terms of placement and provision of adequate training for the young graduates.
