Speaking at yesterday's Merdeka celebrations organised by the Asia Pacific University of Technology & Innovation (APU), Deputy Education Minister P. Kamalanathan stressed that events geared towards remembering the nation's struggles and successes must always be given priority and cannot be taken for granted. According to him, while creating awareness is of utmost importance, it is imperative that students should also understand and continue to practice the values gained.
"We need [to] continue to inculcate the national day celebration throughout the country among all students [as] these values do not just appear in a day or two, but it takes time."
The minister said that the government will continue to encourage all public and private institutions as well as the ministries to ensure that the "spirit of independence extends within every Malaysian citizen so that they can continue to inform and enliven the spirit of independence every year."
