Fully-integrated media offerings are the key to the success of Media Prima Berhad in its rise as the pre-eminent and largest integrated media group in Malaysia.

Datuk Johan Jaaffar, the Chairman of Media Prima Berhad and also Adjunct Professor at Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM), said that Media Prima was able to attract a daily audience of 24 million to its services through its numerous platforms, namely its television networks, print media, radio stations, advertisements, as well as its digital platform.

“Content is everything in the world of media. The people are spoilt for choice with a plethora of media nowadays, but only the most effective media will dominate the market. In terms of the content it offers, Media Prima adopts the 360 degree approach in that it is not restricted to any particular type of media.

“Integrated media has the capacity and capability to reach a larger audience,” he said in a talk entitled The Media Prima Experience: New Media, Advertising and Branding, organised by the School of Multimedia Technology and Communication (SMMTC), UUM.

Apart from this, he said, the content in the print media, radio stations and television networks owned by Media Prima was not focused on only one particular group of audience.

“The content of the national dailies, Berita Harian and the New Straits Times, is more serious compared with that in Harian Metro, which is of a more sensational variety.

“TV3, the premier commercial broadcast station serves public interest and caters to audiences of all ages; ntv7 caters to urban audiences; 8tv caters to audiences of Chinese descent; and TV9 targets the youth,” he said.

The Media Prima Group owns and operates four free-to-air local television networks, namely TV3, 8TV, ntv7 andTV9 and three radio networks i.e. Fly FM, Hot FM and One FM.

The Media Prima Group also owns more than 98 percent equity interest in The New Straits Times Press (Malaysia) Berhad (NSTP). NSTP is Malaysia’s oldest and largest newspaper publisher. It publishes three national newspapers, namely the New Straits Times, Berita Harian, and Harian Metro.

In addition, the Media Prima Group also owns Primeworks Studios Sdn. Bhd. (PWS), a content creation subsidiary company which is also Malaysia’s biggest production company as well as the leading outdoor advertising outfit in Malaysia through Big Tree Outdoor Sdn. Bhd., UPD Sdn. Bhd., The Right Channel Sdn. Bhd., Kurnia Outdoor Sdn. Bhd., and Jupiter Outdoor Network Sdn. Bhd.

Also present at the talk were Dr. Norsiah Abdul Hamid, the Deputy Dean of SMMTC; Dr. Rosli Mohammed, the Head of the Communication Department; and Dr. Mohd Khairie Ahmad, a Senior Lecturer at SMMTC.
