Malaysian automotive industry to hire more technical, skilled workers

Malaysia's automotive industry remains one of the key contributors to the country's national revenue and economy. It contributed RM30 billion to the national GDP in 2013. Furthermore, the industry is expected to provide high-income jobs to about 180,000 people by 2020.

Frost & Sullivan remains positive on the Malaysian automotive industry and is predicting vehicle sales to grow by 3.15% in 2015 to reach 685,950 units.Local skilled and semi-skilled workers will replace 80% of foreign workers in the automotive manufacturing industry by 2020.

Currently a total of 550,000 people were involved in the automotive industry from 2000-2014. With the projected number of workforce required to support this industry, the government has placed its focus on Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) to produce more high skilled workers.

The following years will highlight Energy Efficient Vehicle (EEV) including strategies and measures to strengthen the entire value chain of the automotive industry. About 85 per cent of vehicles produced in Malaysia in 2020 will be EEVs.
