  • Despite an increasing number of medical graduates, the country is facing a shortage of specialist doctors.
  • More government jobs for doctors and allied healthcare

Currently, about 500 to 600 doctors train to become specialists every year. This is not enough to address the pending crisis later on.

More doctors who can specialise in cardiothoracic and hepatobiliary surgeries and other new infectious, lifestyle and chronic diseases are needed.

The country currently has 36, 607 doctors including specialists with a doctor population ratio of 1:791 based on the estimated population of 34 million.

The ministry is hoping to have 85,000 doctors to reach the standard ratio of 1:400 by 2020. The Ministry together with the Malaysian Medical Council and Education Ministry is working on the approvals for new medical schools in Malaysia.

As for employment, the Ministry will create more government jobs for doctors and other healthcare professionals.
