24 gold, 4 silver, and 5 bronze medals reaped by Malaysia in the Asean Skills Competition Kuala Lumpur 2016.

The 6 day competition, which was held between September 23rd - 28th, had 25 categories including automobile technologies, mobile robotics, fashion technology, mechanical engineering, design, information technology, culinary art and service industry skills.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said it is vital for the nation and the region that technical and vocational education is in continuous development due to higher demand for skilled workforce.

Zahid is advocating for a strong education and training policies with a syllabus that matches national development priorities. He also noted that education and skills are critical to the agility of the workforce and a major factor of attractiveness for foreign investment opportunities. Skilled workforce will eventually lead Malaysia to becoming an efficient labour market..

TVET programmes in Malaysia are becoming the focus of the government. The development of these programmes is proven to be fruitful in multiple occasions. The competition could be seen as a proof of that.

The 11th Malaysian Plan is set to harness TVET's potentials and aid the transition of the nation to highly-skilled status.

The competition is organised once every two years and is considered the biggest vocational education and skills excellence event in Asean.

Asean Skill Competition was initiated in 1993 at the International Labour Organization (ILO)/Asian and Pacific Skill Development Programme (APSDEP) meeting in Japan. Asean member nations agreed to hold this competition to promote and upgrade skill standards in the region and compare the region's skills to the international level.

The next competition will be held in Bangkok, Thailand.
