Whilst most of the students would find studying law challenging, one KDU-OBU student managed to balance her study life and participated in the ASIAN Law Student Association (“ALSA”) International Law Review Competition.
Liew Juan Juan, who is currently studying in the KDU-Oxford Brookes University 2+1 Twinning Programme, has won the first prize for an essay-writing competition titled “Human Rights and Time Advancement.” When asked about how she felt on winning the first prize at an international level competition, she
modestly said: “I did not know that I won. I only found out when a friend of mine tagged me on Facebook.”
Her initial reaction was that she could not believe it to be true as she had very little expectation, let alone winning the first prize. “I entered the competition thinking it was for the National rounds, but I was surprised when I found out that I also beat other countries in Asia to win the ALSA International competition.” She only hope that the former Chief Justice of Malaya, Tan Sri Dato Zaki bin Tun Azmi, would read her submission. Nonetheless, she was equally delighted having H.E. José Ramos Horta, the former president of East Timor, a Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and an expert in human rights examine and award her piece of work as the winner.
About her essay, she explained: “I tried to approach the topic at a different angle. I did not focus only on the law and the cases. I described the human rights law in the United Kingdom, the outcries of justice by child brides, and the discrimination faced by the whistle-blower, Mr Snowden. My interest in human rights leans more to the protection of children and women rights, and I am very grateful that Sir Ramos-Horta appreciated my chance to express my feelings on human rights. The winning of this competition further encourages me to explore the extensive area of human rights, and I only hope to be able to give back to society one day with my knowledge.”
It was not easy for her to pen down all the information due to human rights being so vast in topic. It took her two weeks to complete the essay due to the complexity of the theme and the limitation of words. In addition to that, the thoughts of giving up never occurred to her as “human rights is one of the topics I am passionate about. I am especially concerned with the rights of women and children, which are usually the first victims to be subjected to unfairness and prejudice.”
Liew Juan Juan is truly grateful that she has a group of very dedicated lecturers at KDU to support her passion in studying as well as in her extra co-curriculum activities. “I would like to thank all my lecturers at KDU, but I would like to especially thank Ms. Cheah Wei Joo, Mr. Rajesvaran Nagarajan, and Mr. Abdul Rashid Ismail for sparking my interest in learning law and human rights. I do enjoy learning with these wonderful people.”
About the ALSA, she is currently the President of the KDU-ALSA. She is very active in her role by organizing a few events for the KDU-ALSA. She has managed a field trip for the KDU-ALSA members to attend the ALSA National Conference 2013 at UITM Shah Alam and also organized a charity project in gathering of funds, recyclable items, and donated items to give to Pusat Jagaan Anbe Sivam in Klang. Liew Juan Juan lauds the support she received from the KDU Law Department and also the Student Alumni Centre (SAC).
Liew Juan Juan has set personal goals for herself. “In the future, I hope to become an advocate who specializes in the area of Human Rights.” She also hopes that her winning will encourage more students to take part in ALSA activity and competition.
