Many students in university struggle to juggle their studies and their passion projects at the same time. Some even give the latter up in an effort to pass and graduate without having to repeat any semesters. Imagine then, how much more difficult that juggling act must become when one is in Harvard, one of the premier tertiary institutions in the world. Step up, Obasi Shaw, who, instead of forgoing his passion for rap, channeled it into his senior thesis. The English major actually submitted a 10-track album entitled ‘Liminal Minds’ as his final thesis. The title was a clever play on the title of the hit CBS show 'Criminal Minds'. 'Liminal Minds' is dedicated to the plight of black Americans and was inspired by a mesh of classic literature from The Canterbury Tales, and socio-political commentary from famous rappers Kendrick Lamar and Chance the Rapper.
According to The Independent, Shaw didn’t even think the school would accept his thesis. But while most students would have submitted poems or essays, Obasi’s bold risk paid off in spades as, according to The Independent, the project received a summa cum laude minus, the second highest grade that can be attained in the department. Obasi Shaw will now work as a software engineer for Google according to the same publication. Here’s hoping he doesn’t give up his passion and releases another album soon. And who knows? It may even snag an even higher grade, perhaps along the lines of Grammy award. To any confused students out there, it just goes to show you that sometimes, taking a big risk pays off handsomely.
