Bahasa Malaysia must be learnt by foreign students when they enrol in Malaysian universities, said Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob today.

The Prime Minister has said the higher education minister (Noraini Ahmad) had agreed that the language is to be made compulsory for all foreign students in the country.

Ismail, also announced that the Dewan Bahasa and Pustaka Act would be changed to include enforcement, which would let the agency take action on those who put up Bahasa Malaysia signs that have errors in them.

When speaking at the Umno general assembly, he told delegates the party must empower the use of Bahasa Malaysia, which he hoped would become Asean’s second language.

He also added that Bahasa Malaysia is the seventh most used language in the world, with more than 300 million people in Asean speaking the language.

Azhar Ahmad, a Perak delegate, has said earlier that it is important to be fluent in Bahasa Malaysia as it is among the top 10 most popular languages in the world.

The Prime Minister has pushed for a broader use of the language internationally, and said that government officials must be speaking Bahasa Malaysia when speaking at conferences and other engagements abroad.
