Football game encourages young adults to learn personal money management online

Harnessing the popularity of the world’s most popular sport, Visa is helping to teach financial concepts with Financial Football, a fast-paced, interactive online video game that seeks to engage students and young adults. To make learning more rewarding, Visa is giving away a trip to the Confederations Cup Final in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil as the grand prize.

Launched at the University Malaya, the Visa Financial Football Malaysia 2013 online competition (accessible through www.my.financialfootball.com) starts today till 2 April 2013. The top ten scorers will be invited to compete at the Grand Final in April for a chance to win the trip to Brazil. Open to all Malaysians aged 18 and above, permanent residents of Malaysia, or those who hold a Malaysia My Second Home (MM2H) status, the competition uses an educational video game accompanied by a classroom curriculum and is entirely skills-based.

Last year, Malaysia's overall financial literacy ranking improved from 9th in 2010 to 6th, with a score of 68 index points out of 100. Malaysia showed improvement in basic money management, financial planning and investment. In terms of overall literacy, Taiwan and New Zealand led the region, and Hong Kong came in third.

Today’s launch was graced by two eminent names in the local football scene - former Malaysian league star turned ESPN & Astro SuperSport football pundit, Abbas Saad and Malaysia’s very own national goalkeeper, Farizal Marlias who entertained university students and guests with financial quizzes and football games.
