The sight of endless concrete buildings and four walls with no greenery can become an eyesore, and it's not just an aesthetic issue. Lack of greenery in urban environments can lead to environmental degradation, increased temperatures, and decreased air quality— something that you might not notice on an everyday basis, but gradually realise as you feel the heat and sweat running on your skin, a sudden increase in wheezing as you gaze through the sky realising that it isn’t as clear as it used to be.
With these issues under our noses, comes Landscape Architects— the unsung heroes of our surroundings. These skilled professionals have the power to transform dull and dreary spaces into vibrant and functional areas. With their expertise, beautiful green spaces can be created that not only look stunning but also provide a range of ecological benefits such as fresher air, cooler temperatures, and improved mental and physical health for everyone.
“With the given rising global warming issues going around not only in the country but in the world, people are growing to realise the importance of landscape architecture. Not only does it improve the air quality around us, but it also increases property values,” says Aqila, a student taking Landscape Architecture at IUKL.

When you think of Landscape Architecture, keep in mind these 2 areas: Design + Horticultural theory. Landscape architecture courses in Malaysia typically cover a range of subjects that are designed to provide students with a solid foundation in both design and horticultural theory.
Some of the core subjects that students will typically learn:
Other subjects may include landscape architecture’s history and theory, urban planning, sustainable design, andsocial-culture. Through these courses, students will gain an understanding of how to create functional and aesthetically pleasing outdoor spaces that are sustainable and promote biodiversity, aside from gaining deeper knowledge on the social and cultural context of the site to design spaces that are meaningful and engaging to the people who use them. Additionally, students will develop practical skills such as drafting and design, planting, and site analysis that they can apply in their future careers as landscape architects.
Architecture is about designing buildings, and their main instruments are structures and hardscapes. As for landscape architecture, you're purely designing outdoor areas, in which plant species are your main instrument.
While it is possible to become a landscape architect without having a comprehensive knowledge of horticulture, it can be more challenging to succeed in this field without this understanding. Plants and vegetation are major components of landscape design. Horticulture covers the cultivation of plants and their care, and it includes knowledge about soil, water, light, and climate requirements. By understanding these concepts, landscape architects can choose the appropriate plant species that will thrive in a particular environment, and create sustainable and biodiverse landscapes. Horticultural expertise can also be valuable in working with contractors and other professionals involved in the implementation of the design, ensuring that the plants are installed correctly and cared for properly. “Getting to know plant species and morphologies of each instrument influence the design process. So yes, it’s really important for you to heavily consider horticulture aspects in the way you design.” Aqilah affirms.
If you’re heavily considering walking down the road of becoming a landscape architect, then it’s best to be prepared on honing these 7 skills:-
Creativity: Landscape architecture involves designing outdoor spaces that are functional, aesthetically pleasing, and environmentally sustainable. Creative thinking is essential for coming up with unique design solutions that meet the needs of the client and the environment.
Technical skills: Landscape architects must be proficient in computer-aided design (CAD) software, such as AutoCAD and SketchUp, to create detailed designs and blueprints. They must also know materials and construction methods, as well as an understanding of grading, drainage, and other site-specific factors.
Communication skills: Landscape architects must be able to communicate effectively with clients, contractors, and other professionals involved in the project. They must be able to listen to the needs of the client and convey their ideas and design concepts clearly and effectively.
Problem-solving skills: Landscape architects must be able to analyze and solve complex problems related to site conditions, environmental factors, and design constraints. They must be able to develop creative solutions that balance the needs of the client with the limitations of the site.
Environmental awareness: Landscape architects must be knowledgeable about environmental issues, such as soil erosion, water conservation, and plant ecology. They must design landscapes that are sustainable, ecologically responsible, and environmentally sensitive.
Project management skills: Landscape architects must be able to manage budgets, timelines, and resources effectively. They must be able to coordinate with contractors and other professionals involved in the project to ensure that the design is implemented correctly and on schedule.
Attention to detail: Landscape architects must have a keen eye for detail and be able to create precise and accurate designs. They must also be able to review and approve construction drawings and specifications to ensure that the design is implemented correctly.
Deciding to enrol in a course can be nerve-wracking; you’re going back and forth deciding whether or not this is the course you want to enrol in, among thousands of other courses available. Aqila says, “If you think you are are prone to nature and passionate about solving environmental, social, and behavioural issues, this field is your calling.”
You also don’t necessarily have to be a born artistic prodigy to gain design skills. Aqila stresses the importance of hard work that always beats talent. She believes that if you’re willing to try and explore the world of design, nothing is impossible.
If you are certain that landscape design is the path you want to take, you may want to consider enrolling in IUKL. The institution is included among the best universities to study landscape architecture in Malaysia. Aqila is pleased with her choice, as the instituition is certified by MQA and recognised by ILAM, the Institute of landscape architecture in Malaysia. This assured her that she will graduate with comprehensive knowledge in the field of landscape architecture, and receive a syllabus that is up-to-date with the market standards.
