Xiong’s path to academic achievement is yet another story that proves that one’s financial background is hardly relevant to success. He achieved what many dream — a full scholarship to Imperial College London, one of the top 10 universities in the world with hard work and determination.
By scoring straight As in both his SPM and STPM, allowed Xiong to apply to many of the top universities in the world, which led to him eventually being accepted by the Imperial College London and securing the JPA Ivy League Scholarship.
“Many told me I dreamt too big, but I still made it here. Even if you don't succeed, at least you try hard enough to achieve your goal. There will surely be something you gain along the way.”
Xiong actually failed many times. He was rejected by the JPA at SPM level and by the Shell Scholarship, he failed the Japanese Scholarship exam, and then NUS rejected his application.
“Learn from mistakes,” he says.
“That means not just knowing what you’ve done wrong, but also writing it down and analysing the situation and then finding ways of improving. It isn’t easy to face failure, but it is these situations that make you who you are today.
“Nobody simply deserves something. You have to work hard to reaching your goals.”
Xiong is now studying Materials with Nuclear Engineering in the Imperial College London. He has also chosen to become a teacher in the Teach For Malaysia programme for the next two years.
